Lionel Messi has revealed that he sought the services of a psychologist for some time while at Barcelona. The 8-time Ballon d’Or winner revealed that despite initially being hesitant about it, seeking professional help proved beneficial for him in the end. After leaving Barcelona, Messi won the World Cup in 2022, solidifying his position in the greatest of all-time debate. Many argue that this achievement surpasses Cristiano Ronaldo’s.

Despite being considered one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, Messi has faced his fair share of tough times. Barca fans will forever remember the trophies, records, and dominance Messi brought to the Spanish team. For instance, the incredible 6-5 aggregate comeback win against Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League in 2017. However, they have also experienced their fair share of disappointments. There is no denying that Messi’s name is closely associated with the majority of Barca’s success while he was at Camp Nou. But every time the Catalan giants fell short, the Argentine was mostly scrutinized.

One of the most notable times was when Barca lost to Roma in the Champions League by away goals in 2018. Also, the shocking 4-0 defeat suffered against a Jurgen Klopp-led Liverpool. This was despite Barcelona having a 3-0 first-leg lead at Camp Nou where Messi scored one of the best free kicks of his career.

Messi mentioned that talking to a psychologist helped him, but he didn’t say why he sought therapy. When asked “did you go to a psychologist?” Messi said:

“I did for a while (to a psychologist) when I was in Barcelona, a long time ago. I was very reluctant at first. I’m someone who keeps everything bottled up. But the truth is, when I went, it did me a lot of good, I really liked it, and it helped me.”

In 2020, Messi said that his partner Antonella had begged him to see a counselor when things were super difficult, but he didn’t listen to her at the time.

“I should have gone but I never went. I find it really hard to take that step even though I know it’s something that I need. They have insisted many times that it’s what I need. I’m someone who keeps everything in and does not share things. I know I need it. I know it would be good for me but I have not done it.”

Regardless, it’s admirable that Messi addressed the matter publicly, acknowledging that even celebrities like him occasionally need assistance from experts. His words will make other people feel better about going to see a psychologist.
