Liberty vs. Fever – Preview
New York Liberty
The New York Liberty started the season with wins in their first four games before they suffered consecutive losses against the Chicago Sky (90-81) and the Minnesota Lynx (84-67). But since those two setbacks, New York enters this matchup riding a two-game winning streak.
This includes a 90-79 victory over the Washington Mystics on Friday night. The Liberty took a 32-17 lead after the first 10 minutes of action. But the Mystics stormed back to trim the deficit to three points heading into the fourth quarter.
New York reclaimed control in the final frame, holding Washington scoreless for a two-and-a-half minute stretch en route to outscoring them by a 20-12 margin. Sabrina Ionescu was one of four starters that scored in double figures. She led the way with 24 points and three assists on 7-for-12 shooting from the field and 4-for-8 from beyond the arc.
Kayla Thornton added 20 points, five steals, and four assists. Breanna Stewart contributed 18 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists, while Jonquel Jones finished with 16 points and 10 boards.
Indiana Fever
On the other side of this matchup, an Indiana Fever squad that came into the season with optimism has had little to celebrate thus far. Heading into their Saturday matinee clash with the Chicago Sky, the Fever had produced just one victory across their first nine outings.
In a matchup that featured three of this year’s top seven picks of the WNBA Draft, there were a couple of chippy moments between the two teams. But when it was said and done, the Fever emerged victorious with a 71-70 victory, earning their first home victory of the season.
Kelsey Mitchell scored a team-high 18 points. NaLyssa Smith finished with 17 points, nine boards, three assists, and two steals. Caitlin Clark contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. The rookie guard spoke about her team’s resiliency in a game in which neither team shot the ball particularly well.
“I thought earlier this season if we would have shot like this, we wouldn’t have won the game because we didn’t have that resiliency and we would have let it affect our defensive play,” Clark said. “So just proud of us, I thought we were really gritty.”
New York and Indiana have already played each other twice this season, with the Liberty winning both of those contests by double-digit margins. Will that trend continue as these teams meet for the third time, or will the Fever win consecutive games for the first time this season?
