One of the experienced boxers, Liam Smith is not afraid to admit that Josh Kelly has talent, although he is determined to prove that his next opponent has weaknesses. He currently boasts a 33-4-1 record, and 20 KOs and is preparing to take on the World Boxing Association international super-welterweight title holder Josh Kelly. He holds a 15-1-1 record with eight KOs in the match set for September 21.
This fight is the undercard for the Riyadh Season at Wembley Stadium event, promoted by the heavyweight championship rematch between the defending IBF champion Joseph Dubois and Anthony Joshua.
Liam Smith: I Wanted Him To Stay After Eubank Loss
This fight is Liam Smith’s first fight this year after losing the rematch against Chris Eubank Jr in Manchester. The next fight he pulled off a somewhat dubious fourth-round TKO over Eubank in January 2023. Eubank, however, avenged his loss nine months later, winning the match through a 10th-round TKO.
However, Liam Smith blamed his loss on an ankle injury and unrest during the training period. As a trilogy fight to end rivalry with Eubank seemed plausible but what he opted for is Josh Kelly. To him, this fight represents a chance to show that he still has the talent to face the best in the business.
Kelly’s Rise and Redemption

Josh Kelly, a talent whose future includes the chance at a world title shot was once written and promoted here in the future, utilized an aggressive wide stance which was pleasing to the eye of the British fans. However, his climb up the ladder was halted after his defeat to David Avanesyan for the European welterweight title in 2021. Since then, Kelly has been determined to get his career back on track and he has gone on to win five consecutive matches.
Liam Smith recognizes Kelly’s abilities but believes that his opponent’s style is not without vulnerabilities, he mentioned that:
“I think he’s a very good fighter. I think he’s a very talented fighter, a very flashy fighter. One of the fighters that’s got that natural ability, that natural flair. You can praise him. But you can also dissect him. He’s got a lot of flaws. He’s got a lot of insecurities. He lacks in many areas. He lacks in areas that I can exploit.
A Stacked Undercard
The coming fight between Liam Smith and Kelly is no doubt an amazing, entertaining, and aggressive fight on the Dubois vs. Joshua undercard. The event also has a European middleweight title fight between Tyler Denny and Hamzah Sheeraz for the title in the co-main event while the main event is the IBF super-featherweight world title fight between Anthony Cacace and Josh Warrington. Moreover, Joshua Buatsi vs Willy Hutchinson will be a light heavyweight, and the Mark Chamberlain vs Josh Padley fight will be in the lightweight category.
Out of all the exciting fights that will take place, Liam Smith vs. Josh Kelly is the most interesting fight where experience will face the showman as this fight will be a turning point in the careers of the fighters.
