Thad Levine Gone from Twins as Purge Continues After Disastrous October 2024

Levine

General Manager Thad Levine is the latest domino to fall as the Minnesota Twins continue to clean house after their disastrous end-of-season collapse. Levine had spent eight years with the team after front-office stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers (1998), Colorado Rockies (1999-2005), and Texas Rangers (2006-16).

It was widely assumed that Levine and president of baseball operations Derek Falvey were a package deal and that Levine would only leave the team for an elevated position with another team. The Twins’ stretch run fall from grace made Levine expendable.

Twins Comment on Levine’s Departure

Today’s team announcement read, Thad is leaving to pursue new challenges and opportunities, both inside and outside of baseball. He has been a true partner and leader, always striving to elevate the organization and care for the people around him.”

Levine helped the team win three American League Central Divison Championships in 2019, 2020, and 2023 and a wild-card berth in 2017. But when the contending Twins went 6-18 in their final 24 games of this past season, heads were certain to roll.

Twins Coaches Chopped

Yesterday, Minnesota announced it cut ties with four Major League coaches. Parting ways with the Twins were hitting coaches Rudy Hernandez and David Popkins, assistant hitting coach Derek Shomon, and assistant bench/infield coach Tony Diaz. The Twins executed a feeble display of hitting in October, which cost these coaches their jobs.

Further employee terminations will undoubtedly occur as the weeks progress. Look for cuts in the minor league coaching staff and scouting department. Rocco Baldelli’s status as the Twins manager is safe for now, and Falvey appears to be staying put. The team was riddled with numerous injuries in 2024, but as All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa stated, they seemed to lose their spirit down the stretch.

Levine Speaks

Levine was his usual classy self as he thanked the team and the fans. He said, “The time is right for me to pursue my next enriching, professional challenge. I will forever cherish the friendships that I have made in the Minnesota Twins organization and throughout Twins Territory.”
