Leonard Ellerbe Weighs In On Canelo Alvarez’s $200 Million Demands

Leonard Ellerbe

Promoter Leonard Ellerbe was recently interviewed about Canelo Alvarez’s recent statement asking for $200 million to fight David Benavidez. According to him, Canelo should get what he demands, seeing that a fight of such magnitude has the potential to generate such an amount of money.

He has opined that the fight could earn enough money to afford the $200 million purse. But Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) also demands a big-money career, which could become difficult financially. I always wondered why Benavidez does not demand at least $50 million if Canelo is to get $200 million.

Leonard Ellerbe Talks on Challenges for Benavidez

Leonard Ellerbe stated that David Benavidez could lose fans, especially if he fights the winner of the October 12 match between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol. Benavidez gave a poor show when he fought at 175 pounds against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15th, and he stands a decent chance of being knocked out again by a fighter like Beterbiev or Bivol. Hence, for Canelo to fight Benavidez would make much sense when Benavidez’s market value has not peaked.

In Leonard Ellerbe’s opinion, boxing is much different from what it was at the time of such mind-boggling fights as Mayweather-Pacquiao. Due to an illegitimate stream and many other influencing elements, PPV sales have declined, and fighters like Canelo or GGG do not get the kind of tremendous response that they used to get. Still, according to Leonard Ellerbe, even in the case of the Canelo-Benavidez fight, the revenue source would be adequately sufficient to cover the costs of a high purse.

Part II: Role Of Saudi Investment

Even if the fight results in a loss, Saudi investors will go ahead if they are willing to spend $250 million. He also knows that such a big investment cannot bring in profit since Benavidez is not famous and has not had many victories. However, he supports the fight and anticipates its arrangements, maybe next year.

Leonard Ellerbe is sure that Canelo will be in a position to fight, whether it be Benavidez or someone else. He feels that Canelo is well-conditioned and ready for almost anything. If Benavidez defeats the winner of Beterbiev vs Bivol, then the fight between him and Canelo would be even bigger. However, he does not believe that Benavidez can beat either of the top contenders.

In Conclusion

For that reason, Leonard Ellerbe backs Canelo’s decision to demand a large purse, pointing out that athletes always believe the money they demand is inadequate given the danger they endure. If the fight with Benavidez does not happen soon, he proposes that Canelo consider a fight against Terence Crawford. Though it may not generate as much fan interest as Joseph Dores, it will still bring more fans and money.
