Leicester City looks to be in the lead for both promotion and the Championship league title after a 5-0 win over fourth-placed Southampton on Tuesday. The Foxes will soon be playing in the Premier League again. This could potentially trigger a clause in the transfer agreement that resulted in Conor Coady moving from Molyneux Stadium to the King Power Stadium, which would undoubtedly be a positive outcome for the Premier League team.
Conor Coady hasn’t had as many appearances for Leicester City as both parties would have hoped after his expensive transfer last summer. However, the success of Leicester City could still benefit Coady’s former club, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Add-on Clause in Leicester City Deal Could Result in Significant Financial Gain For Wolves
Last summer, Coady joined Leicester City in a deal worth an initial £7.5 million. According to Sky Sports, the deal also included a £1 million add-on clause. The specifics of that clause were not made public, but it is usual for these kinds of add-ons to ask if the buying club achieves its goals. In Leicester’s case, that would have meant getting back into the Premier League.
If that is the basis of the clause, Wolves will benefit from the Foxes’ recent return to form and retaking the top spot in the second division. They would be in line to receive a seven-figure payout. Additionally, personal achievements by the player or reaching a specific number of appearances or goals can be included in such clauses. However, given Coady’s arrival at a later point in his career, the most probable decision between the parties was to base the clause on promotion.
Could Leicester City Get More From Conor Coady Next Season?
Most Leicester fans will agree that the Wolves have gotten more out of the deal so far, based on what they have seen from their new player. Coady started his career in Leicester City with a freak injury in preseason that broke his foot. Since then, he has only played 11 times in the Championship, starting seven times and spending most of his time on boss Enzo Maresca‘s bench. It may not be the ideal outcome for the club or the player, considering he was one of their high-profile summer acquisitions. However, with the three-year contract he signed at the King Power last year, there is still an opportunity for the transfer to yield positive results.
The 31-year-old defender still has many playing years ahead of him and a wealth of knowledge from his time as a regular in the Premier League and an England international. This will prove to be quite beneficial for Leicester City, as they are on track for a return to the Premier League. Without a doubt, Coady is immensely talented, but unfortunately, the current dynamics of the Foxes team have hindered his ability to showcase it. If his efforts haven’t been what Leicester City fans were hoping for, they may find that his experience in the top flight helps them as they make the tough move to the Premier League.
It might look like Wolves is getting the better deal if they get a seven-figure sum because Leicester City gets promoted. However, the deal is still new and could turn out to be a good one for Leceister City come the start of next season.
