Despite sitting at a 2-6, the Las Vegas Raiders aren’t making any adjustments. They’re content to stick with what they’ve been doing rather than make changes. The offense is one of the worst in the league, yet Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy will retain play calling duties. Las Vegas Raiders Head Coach Antonio Pierce has repeatedly defended Getsy saying “it’s a lack of execution” by the players instead of bad game plans. Some of Getsy’s decisions have been extremely baffling.
Extremely Confusing Personnel Decisions
Last week against the arch-rival Kansas City Chiefs, the Las Vegas Raiders were down 20-13 and attempting to come back. For some reason, Getsy had backup Offensive Tackle Thayer Munford lined up at wide receiver for two plays, including the play where Gardner Minshew fumbled away the football. When asked why he had a 6-foot-8 offensive lineman playing at receiver, Getsy said that he was “trying to give Kansas City a look they hadn’t seen before.” He also had 5-foot-eight Wide Receiver Tre Tucker block an edge rusher one-on-one with a disastrous result.
The Las Vegas Raiders also sent out superstar Edge Rusher Maxx Crosby at fullback which didn’t work either. It just seems like Getsy is flinging random things at the wall in hopes that it works, but none of it has been working. What’s next, having Offensive Tackle Kolton Miller getting carries at running back? There might be an improvement after Running Back Alexander Mattison put up 15 yards on 14 carries against the Chiefs.
Play Calling Is Still Terrible
Getsy recently moved from calling plays on the sidelines to calling plays up in the booth above the field. It hasn’t made a single bit of difference, but Pierce said the plan going forward is for Getsy to remain there. It doesn’t matter where Getsy is positioned in the stadium, the play calling has been terrible. One week, the Las Vegas Raiders ran four straight passing plays inside the five-yard line and didn’t score. Last week they ran it up the middle three straight times, then Minshew immediately scrambled into a sack on fourth down.
Brock Bowers is leading the league in receptions. Yet last week from the 13-minute mark in the second quarter until near the end of the game, Bowers didn’t even receive a single target. Pierce has defended Getsy, saying “It’s easy to point the finger at Luke or myself. But the O-line play, quarterbacks, the running backs, turnovers and missed blocks, missed execution on plays, alignments, the details, all those things have to get cleaned up.” It should be noted the Las Vegas Raiders run the ball on 70% of first downs, a level of predictability that no other team comes close to.
Conclusion
This coaching staff can’t be trusted going forward after this season. There are rumors that several Las Vegas Raiders coaches including Getsy have “checked out” and are simply there to collect a paycheck. Pierce has been guilty of publicly blaming the players while constantly defending the mistakes he’s made as a Head Coach. Instead of making adjustments, the team is stuck in a hamster wheel of mistakes. Minshew is staying as the quarterback despite leading the league in turnovers.
The Las Vegas Raiders have the 32nd-ranked rushing attack and we’re seeing them try to force the same game plan that hasn’t been working. It wasn’t working in September, and it isn’t going to work in November. Don’t forget, Pierce said this team somehow still doesn’t have an identity after nine games. No team intentionally tanks or makes intentional decisions to lose, outside of the 2011 Indianapolis Colts. However, Pierce and Getsy have shown they can’t be trusted with a rookie quarterback in 2025.
