Las Vegas Raiders Should Add Playmakers To Strong Roster

Las Vegas Raiders

If you’re the Las Vegas Raiders, are you satisfied with Gardner Minshew as your starting quarterback? Are you happy with the current cornerback room?

If your answers to these questions are an emphatic no, then it might be time to invest in players to help boost the team. General Manager Tom Telesco has plenty of cap space to work with. There are lots of players out there in various positions that could help the team out.

Las Vegas Raiders Lack Defensive Depth

Coming into this season, the Las Vegas Raiders appear to have a solid defense once again. The cornerback room is noticeably lacking depth, appearing as one of the biggest glaring points on the entire roster. In a division with Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, that leaves your team open to four potential losses.

Adoree’ Jackson played very well under Las Vegas Raiders Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham over in New York. He should be expecting a call from Telesco in the next week or so as he’s the best cornerback on the market. Jalen Mills, Ahkello Witherspoon, and Chandon Sullivan all lurk in free agency unless the Raiders are waiting to see if better options become available soon.

‘If You Have Two QBs’, You Have None’

Another massive problem has to be the quarterback position. Minshew and backup quarterback Aidan O’Connell had a battle for the starting quarterback position during training camp and the preseason. To say that it was very underwhelming would be an understatement.

Neither quarterback did much to set themselves apart which frustrated first-year Head Coach Antonio Pierce. After Minshew won the job, he declared this to be his team. But if the Raiders are looking to inspire more confidence in their quarterback room while also investing in the future, there are some potential options out there to solve their quarterback issues.

‘DTR’ to Become a Potential Raider

Dorian Thompson-Robinson has become a preseason legend in each of the last two seasons. It is rumored that the Cleveland Browns are looking to move him after investing in Tyler Huntley and Deshaun Watson as their top two quarterbacks. Another option that Las Vegas Raiders fans would know better is Tyson Bagent, the Chicago Bears backup quarterback who beat the Raiders 30-12 last season.

While the team passed on New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton in the draft, they might want to hit up the Patriots to see if they could potentially acquire him in a trade. All of these quarterbacks are players in their first or second season in the league. All of these players are potentially better options than O’Connell and the projected third quarterback Nathan Peterman.

Running Backs Could Use A Boost

Zamir White is going to be the starting running back. The hope is that rookie Dylan Laube and Alexander Mattison will be able to back him up in addition to Amir Abdullah. But some other big-time running backs could add more to the room than what the Las Vegas Raiders currently have.

Dalvin Cook is the biggest name out there at the moment, though he appeared a step slower last season. Former Oakland Raider Latavius Murray was still very productive last season despite being at an older age. Kareem Hunt, Jerick McKinnon, and Eno Benjamin could also potentially come in as RB2 behind White and put in great seasons if given the opportunity.

This Team Still Has Playoff Potential

In a stacked AFC, the Las Vegas Raiders are still a dark horse playoff contender. They will not be playing an exciting brand of football, but they hope to be playing winning football. At the end of the day, it’s not about the highlights, it’s about the wins.

They have enough talent to go out and become a Wild Card team, the question is whether or not they can put it all together. Telesco needs to go out and capitalize on their window by adding to the roster before it’s too late. It’s time to prove that “Commitment to Excellence” isn’t just an old catchphrase from a bygone era.
