The Las Vegas Golden Knights broke out of the road losses and finally secured their first road win of the 2024-2025 NHL season. Facing off against the Edmonton Oilers, the Golden Knights took the foot off the offensive pedal and relied heavily on their defense. After a rough first and second period, the Golden Knights clawed their way back, dominating the last period of the game and obtaining their first road trip win.
Period One
The Golden Knights visited Edmonton tonight at 9:30 p.m. EST. After four hockey-less days, the Las Vegas Golden Knights faced a familiar team in the north. The first period between the two teams was a decent battle back and forth for dominance. However, the first period was pretty safe hockey.
Patience and spacing were essential elements in the first. Nicolas Hague was absent yet again due to injury tonight. Ben Hutton made his 2024-2025 NHL debut tonight, taking Hague’s position. Brayden McNabb drew a high-sticking penalty, but the VGK successfully stamped it out. Neither of the clubs scored for some time in the first until Jack Eichel juked Stuart Skinner on a breakaway, scoring first.
Period Two
The second period of game five on the road for the Las Vegas Golden Knights was all Oilers. The Knights spent most of their time behind their blue line. Although they have been patient, their gameplay turned to reactionary hockey rather than anticipating and challenging plays. Brett Kulak of the Edmonton Oilers sent a wrist shot past Adin Hill, evening the score to one apiece. In response to the Oiler goal, the VGK was momentarily sparked and applied pressure in the Oiler’s defensive zone. Edmonton caught a penalty, offering the Golden Knights a chance to answer the recent goal.
The VGK had an even higher likelihood of scoring during the power play. The Edmonton Oilers rank last in the league in killing off power plays. The power play line for the Vegas club had multiple good looks but ultimately did not capitalize on the man advantage. Shortly after the power play opportunity, Oiler Zach Hyman received a bizarre pass off the boards and buried the puck behind Adin Hill. The score was 2-1, and the Vegas lines continued to play reactionary hockey.
Final Period
The Las Vegas Golden Knights rallied on the opening shift of the final period. After a majority defensive game from Vegas, they finally turned on the jets and turned on the armor in the third period against the Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton offered another power play to the Knights after a holding call. Defenseman Noah Hanifin was the key player driving the offensive momentum for the team. Hanifin tied the score 2-2 on the power play, reawakening the sleeping giant. The Las Vegas Golden Knights became gritty in the neutral, battling for the puck and no longer playing reactionary hockey.
Adin Hill held the score in multiple astonishing saves tonight. Throughout the game, Hill shut down chances from Edmonton left, right, and center. Sprawling across the crease and making desperate blocks, Hill held the Oilers at bay while the Las Vegas Golden Knights sorted out their offense.
Following a save from Hill in the third, the puck was turned over in the neutral zone, and Noah Hanifin sent a bullet straight to the top right corner. The score was now 3-2. The Oilers pulled their goaltender in desperation, but Captain Mark Stone stripped Edmonton of the puck and sealed the outcome with an empty netter. With a first-road win and a resounding comeback, the final score was 4-2 in favor of the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
Las Vegas Golden Knights Earn First Road Win
The Las Vegas Golden Knights had an arduous start to a highly anticipated game against the Edmonton Oilers tonight but continue to prove that doubting the Knights is always a hard lesson learned. The VGK has struggled to mesh their defense together this season and have paid the price for it, but tonight’s game was transformative.
While the explosive offense has been the saving grace for the VGK thus far, the defensive lines not only have shown more improvement behind their blue line but inspired the offensive pursuits tonight. Defenseman Noah Hanifin seemed to create magic out of slim chances, scoring two goals tonight on multiple chances. With the VGK’s first road win secured, the next challenge awaits.
