Las Vegas Aces Stops Sky’s Late Rune to Snatch a 2-pt Win

Minnesota Lynx vs. Las Vegas Aces, WNBA, Las Vegas Aces Chicago Sky, Indiana Fever, Los Angeles Sparks, Minnesota Lynx, New York Liberty, Seattle Storm, Phoenix Mercury, Dallas Wings, Connecticut Sun, Washington Mystics, Atlanta Dream

A late lay-up by Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson dashed the comeback dreams for the Chicago Sky, 77-75, on Sunday night. The show’s stars came to play as A’ja Wilson powered the Aces to victory behind a 20-point, 18-rebound performance including a game-winning dagger at the buzzer. Chicago Sky’s Chennedy Carter posted a game-high 25 points, while rookie Angel Reese secured an eye-popping 22 rebounds in the contest.

Las Vegas badly needed the win after dropping back-to-back games to the Minnesota Lynx. The victory improves the Aces record to 18-11 while dropping Chicago’s mark to 11-18.  Las Vegas is 3.5 games back of Minnesota (22-8) in the Western Conference slightly behind Seattle (18-10).

Despite the loss, Chicago still maintains a slim half-game margin over the Atlanta Dream (10-18) for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta welcomes the Indiana Fever (13-16) to town tonight for an Eastern Conference showdown in Atlanta.

Las Vegas looked to be in the driver’s seat in this contest when guard Kelsey Plum drained a three-pointer to enter the lead to 13 points at 73-60 with under five minutes to play. The Aces would play the next three minutes without adding points while Chicago continued to fight in front of the home crowd.

Chelsea Gray’s layup disrupted the Chicago scoring run before back-to-back threes rained down from the Sky from Lindsay Allen and Chennedy Carter to pull the Sky with one possession, 75-72. Chicago’s Carter drained a game-tying three-point shot with 1.0 remaining on the scoreboard to the delight of the crowd in Chicago.

That one second was enough for Chelsea Gray to find A’ja Wilson for a layup for the dramatic 77-75 victory.

A’ja Wilson Ties WNBA Scoring Record

A’ja Wilson scored her 4,500th point on Sunday in Game #217 of her WNBA career. Wilson, and New York’s Brianna Stewart, are now tied at the top of the leaderboard as the fastest athletes to reach that scoring milestone.  WNBA-legend Diana Taurasi is the all-time scoring leader and reached the 4,500-point milestone in 219 games.

A’ja Wilson still leads the WNBA in scoring at 26.6 points per game this season. Wilson is second overall in rebounds at 11.9/game behind Angel Reese (12.9/game). Wilson’s boasts impressive WNBA MVP credentials and those same statistics were invaluable to the Aces win on Sunday night.

Angel Reese Ties WNBA Rebounding Mark

Chicago Sky’s dynamic rookie Angel Reese secured her 22nd double-double of the season matching the WNBA rookie record set by Tina Charles 2010. Connecticut’s Alyssa Thomas set the all-time double-doubles mark last season at 28 games.

The 20+ rebounding performance was the third straight one for the forward from LSU. The last player to dominate the glass with three consecutive 20+ rebounding performances was Detroit Pistons legend Ben Wallace in 2003.

Angel Reese fell one rebound shy of tying Charles’ single-game rebounding mark which still reigns supreme at 23 rebounds in a single contest.
