The WNBA league is up-and-coming. However, Aja Wilson has no chills as the two-time MVP is coming in hot. The Las Vegas Aces have been a bit shaky while trying to remain competitive in this 2024-25 season.
Before now, Vegas has lost more than four times in a row. This is the first time this has happened since Wilson was a rookie. Thus, winning against the Phoenix Suns breaks the losing streak as Wilson’s performance contributes to her team’s win and WNBA historical records.
Will Wilson add another MVP title to her name?
Aja Wilson Makes WNBA History
While the Atlanta Dream Center, Tina Charles, held the record of 25+ points in seven straight games since 2021, Wilson decided to prove her MVP worthiness. Thus this 2024-25 season, the Aces Center bagged more than 25 points in eight straight games.
The streak started counting on 22nd May 2024, when the Las Vegas Aces won their match against the Indiana Fever (99-80) who were 1-for-6 at that time. Indiana fever gave her the bucket-maker fever, probably Caitlin Clark, as Wilson’s performance rewarded her a double-double and a team win. A’ja finished with 29 points and 15 rebounds.
The 27-year-old center maintained her performance on the court despite the team’s successes and failures in their previous games. Her game with the Phoenix Mercury on June 14 was the decisive moment to break the record and make history in the league.
However, before the 14th of June, Wilson made history by dropping 35 points and getting 10 rebounds with five steals to help the Ace win with a 14-point margin against the Dallas Wings (95-81). She was the first player in the WNBA league to drop that performance in a game. Also, it was the Ace Center’s 10th game with more than 30 points and 10 rebounds.
Thus, Wilson joins Lauren Jackson, Candace Parker, Lisa Leslie, Brittney Griner, Tina Charles, and Breanna Stewart to be the seventh player with 10 or more of that performance.
Wilson’s Performance in the Las Vegas Aces vs Phoenix Mercury Game
In the first quarter at the Footprint Center, the Mercury came out strong finishing outside the arc and inside the paint to finish with a 16-point margin (28-12). The Aces’ defense wasn’t strong enough to hold down this Mercury team.
The Mercury maintained their lead through the second quarter until Jackie Young wasn’t having it. The Ace started getting offensively aggressive with Young taking the lead.
The Mercury’s struggle to keep up was futile as Jackie’s outburst didn’t give the opposing team’s defense a breathing space. Then the Aces guard dished the ball to Wilson at the arc’s corner for the three-point bucket.
The Turning Point Of The Game
The three-pointer from the Aces’ Center in the second quarter was the turning point of the game. The Aces tied for the lead (46-46). From that time, Mercury couldn’t come close to the lead as the Aces were on fire with Jackie Young and A’ja Wilson taking the lead as the team’s top performers.
The game finished with Jackie Young leading the team with 34 points. Wilson on the other hand bagged a double-double to lay a strong foundation for her broken record. She scored 32 points and claimed 15 rebounds. Also, her performance gave the Aces 42 points in the second quarter.
The final score of the game was 103-99 in favor of the Aces who are 6-for-5 and fifth in the league. The Mercury (6-7) remains sixth in the league. Wilson is currently averaging 28.6 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks for 33.4 minutes.
