Lando Norris’s Bold Move: Fastest Lap at Dutch GP

Lando Norris

Lando Norris decided to risk it for the extra point in the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, achieving the fastest lap. The young British driver performed exceptionally well in the wet conditions yesterday at Zandvoort, despite the somewhat poor beginning of the race on Sunday.

He overtook Max Verstappen who had taken the lead early and soon, he was much ahead and easily won with the largest margin in F1 this year. What was even more amazing could only be seen in the final lap of his McLaren MCL38 F1 car. He took the fastest lap of the race even though he was using hard tyres that were not particularly fresh, having been routed on them in practice Qualifying 17; Lap Time 1m13. 817s.

This last-ditch attempt also denied Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton for fastest lap point that he achieved a time of 1:13. 878s on lap 62.

Lando Norris as a Warning Sign for Red Bull

Lando Norris didn’t only affect Hamilton in this unexpected overtaking spree in the last few laps, but also, Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko. This is something that concerned Marko as a signal to his team because Red Bull drivers would not be able to match his fastest lap.

Lando Norris’s extra point for completing the fastest lap meant that the points difference separating him from Verstappen was reduced to eight instead of seven. Thus allowing him to sustain the slope that was required to do the title challenge. However, as it has been found later, McLaren did not approve of this action of Norris, who decided to go for the fastest lap on his own. If there had been a prior discussion regarding things that might go wrong, the team probably would have been dissuaded from it – pointing to his assertiveness with his decision-making abilities.

McLaren’s Surprise Dominance

In the race, Lando Norris was pleasantly shocked about the rate at which his McLaren became faster while Verstappen seemed to slow down towards the end. Kimi Raikkonen was happy with his car throughout most of the race, while Lando Norris became more confident as the race went on after passing Verstappen.

It’s a nice feeling inside the car, and especially when I got past. I could just get comfortable, I could push, I had clean air, and that’s always a big help.

In Conclusion

The F1 Dutch GP saw Lando Norris decide to go for the fastest lap representing a turning point in his career in terms of maturity and skills. And if he decided to go alone to kick that extra point, then showed that he could risk the team and himself to gain extra points and thus send a message of intent to rivals regarding the championship.

This audacious decision also served to declare his willingness to target Formula 1’s top names and served as a reminder of McLaren’s team’s rising capabilities as they now keep on causing upsets. During the season, those qualities might prove decisive in Norris’s bid for the championship as he will be able to rely on his natural feel for the sport and an increasingly liberal approach to the hinted-at rulebook.
