Logan Paul entered Summerslam 2024 as the longest-reigning champion at 270 days but will no longer hold that accolade as he was defeated by LA Knight and lost the WWE United States Championship. The crowd was ready to see LA Knight holding a championship for the first time in WWE and they got exactly what they wanted, even with a Machine Gun Kelly cameo.
Let’s take a closer look at what this means for the new United States Champion going forward on WWE Smackdown.
Who will feud with LA Knight going forward for the United States Championship?
With LA Knight now holding the United States Championship, the two singles championships on WWE Smackdown are held by babyfaces as Cody Rhodes still is the Undisputed WWE Champion. This is going to be something that will be interesting as there are a lot of different opponents that could be gunning for the United States Championship and give Smackdown a bit of a refresh.
One thing that is always going to be there is a rematch with Logan Paul but going under the assumption that there will not be a rematch, there are still some people who could battle against LA Knight for the title. One name that pops up immediately is AJ Styles as he is a decorated champion and has not held a title in WWE for a few years now and could always be viewed as a legitimate contender, similar to Kevin Owens as well.
However, WWE could decide to give a younger talent “the rub” here and give them some exposure as guys like Carmelo Hayes could be viewed at that level right now. There is a darkhorse contender for the United States Championship that could be the main event of a big Smackdown episode: Montez Ford.
It appeared like Montez Ford was going to be destined to be a singles star a few years ago but he has remained as one-half of The Street Profits. LA Knight vs. Montez Ford would be a fun style clash and would be an entertaining battle between two stars to revitalize Smackdown, which feels empty for the most part outside of The Bloodline. WWE has a chance to make LA Knight an even bigger star as United States Champion but it depends on the booking after Summerslam 2024.
