Kyrie Irving Sets the Record Straight On Coaching Future

Kyrie Irving discusses his post-basketball plans.

Dallas Mavericks Point Guard Kyrie Irving recently set the record straight on coaching in the future, per Bolavip. Irving, 32, has played in the NBA for 13 years and counting. Irving’s NBA career began in 2011. The Cleveland Cavaliers selected him with the first overall pick in the first round at the 2011 NBA Draft out of Duke.

Irving excelled with the Cavaliers, as he became a 2016 NBA champion and a 2011 Rookie of the Year winner. Irving’s widely considered one of the best ball handlers of all time. Before being traded to the Mavericks on February 6, 2023, Irving played a two-year stint with the Boston Celtics from 2017 to 2019 and had a four-year tenure with the Brooklyn Nets from 2019 to 2023. Here’s what you need to know about his post-retirement life.

Kyrie Irving’s Stance

Kyrie Irving played his first full season with the Dallas Mavericks last year and advanced to the 2024 NBA Finals for his fourth Finals appearance in his 13-year NBA career. However, Irving reportedly knows his playing career will end sooner than later, and recently shared his stance on a coaching career someday.

After a recent Mavericks practice, Irving revealed why a coaching career isn’t in the cards for him. He told the media, “Yeah, I don’t know if I’m going to coach at this level, man … I’m more of like, (a) consultant type.” He added, “I like to make my own hours … If you know my personality, I’m not trying to be forced to do anything, man. You’re telling me I got to show up at 9 AM, I’m like… maybe 9:08 (AM) or something like that.”

Irving Offers a Solution

Kyrie Irving probably won’t serve as a coach after he retires from the NBA. Irving might work as a consultant for an NBA team, but it’s unclear if he’ll deliver on this possible career path. However, Irving recently offered a solution and gave the media some insight into his plans for life after professional basketball.

Irving stated to the media, “Once I’m done I’ll definitely have one of the best academies of all-time. You know, skills training, mental, spiritual, emotional … And just bring in a lot of the experts, not only in the game of basketball but in different fields.” He elaborated, “Just bringing a lot of youth together, lot of the young old-heads, old-heads bringing them back, making sure I’m paying homage to the legends. After basketball is going to be so much fun, but right now I’m enjoying this just as much.”

Jason Kidd’s Irving Prediction

Dallas Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd recently appeared in an interview with NBA insider Marc Stein on DLLS Mavs. Kidd, 51, predicted that Kyrie Irving is ready to elevate his game this season and stated, “[Kyrie Irving] has really loved being in Dallas … He loves the situation. He respects [general manager Nico Harrison] and myself.”

Kidd continued, “He wants to win, and I think you saw that in the numbers he put up … You can see that in training camp. He’s doing all the reps (and) doesn’t want to sit out. I think you’re going to see an even better Kyrie (Irving) this season.” Kyrie Irving should successfully elevate his game this season, as long as he stays healthy and plays consistently. He was a significant part of the Mavericks’ regular season and postseason success last season.
