Kyle Kuzma Reportedly Wants To Be Traded To the Dallas Mavericks

Kyle Kuzma

Washington Wizards Forward Kyle Kuzma reportedly wants a trade to the Dallas Mavericks, but would such a trade be possible? Kuzma, 29, previously rejected the Mavericks’ trade and wanted to remain in Washington, D.C. The then-28-year-old spoke to The Athletic’s Josh Robbins, telling him there was a point the Mavericks wanted him, presented him with trade details, and left the decision to him after asking him what he wanted to do.

According to Robbins, Kuzma doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his current four-year, $102 million contract with the Wizards. Kuzma initially declined his $13 million player option and opted to enter free agency before staying with the Wizards. If Kuzma signed with the Mavericks, he would’ve gone from the second-worst team in the 15-67 Wizards to a 50-32 Mavericks team that ultimately made the NBA Finals.

Kyle Kuzma’s Wish List To the NBA

Kyle Kuzma could’ve joined the Dallas Mavericks. Instead, Kuzma decided to stay with the Washington Wizards. Kuzma told The Athletic, “In my career, I won a championship. So, I understand that when we play this game of basketball it’s not about contending for a playoff spot. It’s about contending for an NBA championship. There’s only like three or four contenders—true contenders. I just felt like our timelines didn’t line up.”

Kuzma also expressed appreciation for Wizards President Michael Winger. Kuzma told The Athletic, “Winger, he’s been very straightforward with me ever since my first meeting with him. He’s a very blunt person, and I am, too. So, I think our relationship has been very positive because of that. You know, not every player can say that. Especially in this business, a lot of things are very passive-aggressive, non-confrontational. A lot of times, a lot of front offices leave a lot of players a little confused on the ground level, and that hasn’t been Winger at all.”

Fast forward to this week, where Kuzma is arguably Washington’s best player. Kuzma has averaged 15.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 42.1% from the field and 26.2% from the three-point line. Per Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fisher, Kuzma’s wish list includes the Mavericks. Fisher reported, “By all indications, he has a lot of interest in going to Dallas. That’s a situation he could have gone to last year, but the Wizards interestingly went to Kyle Kuzma and gave him the opportunity to accept that trade or decline. He chose to stay.”

Wizards Unsure Regarding Kuzma’s Return

The Washington Wizards are reportedly unsure after Kyle Kuzma’s return to the court, a 126-106 loss to the New York Knicks at the Capital One Arena on Monday. Washington fell to 5-25, while New York improved to 23-10. Kuzma finished with nine points, three rebounds, and three assists in 21 minutes off the bench after missing 12 games with a rib cartilage injury.

Wizards Head Coach Brian Keefe said the 21 minutes were around the foundation the team laid out for Kuzma before adding Kuzma’s playing time moving forward was to be determined. With just a few weeks before the trade deadline, Washington could move on from Kuzma, a possibility as Kuzma’s mother, Karri, appeared to confirm Marc Stein’s trade report on X, formerly Twitter, with “I’ll sit this right here.”

The Wizards should be more enthusiastic to trade Kuzma this year than the last year. If so, Washington should walk a fine line between choosing how much to play him with how much to play their younger players. The team’s desire to showcase him, but also show younger players like Justin Champagnie and Bilal Coulibaly their rotation spots won’t be affected.

Mavericks Are Unlikely to Acquire Kyle Kuzma

The Dallas Mavericks are unlikely to acquire Kyle Kuzma, even though the Washington Wizards have shifted to promoting younger players, as Kuzma’s importance to them has declined. The Mavericks are 20-13 with last year’s moves, Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington Jr., re-energizing their NBA championship hopes. The Mavericks arguably don’t need Kuzma, as the offseason acquisition of Naji Marshall has been instrumental.

In addition, Dallas will need to create $28 million in salary cap space to satisfy Kuzma’s 15% trade kicker, which would force them to release three rotational players. The Mavericks’ current rotation — and roster in general — arguably shouldn’t be broken up to acquire Kuzma, especially with Kuzma’s ice-cold rejection in February, as this could lead to tension on and off the court.

The Mavericks likely won’t acquire Kuzma, but Kuzma’s presence could help another Western Conference team. Kuzma could help the Sacramento Kings turn their season around, or become a trade target for the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis reportedly missed out on trading for Dorian Finney-Smith. Finney-Smith was traded, alongside Shake Milton, to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for D’Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis, and three future second-round picks on Sunday.
