Korbin Albert is undoubtedly one of the best young talents in the world so far. She has made a huge impact since her first appearance for the U.S. Women’s National Team, catching the eyes of viewers and making coaches turn heads. She plays club football for Paris Saint-Germain in France, one of the most competitive leagues in the footballing universe. In the 2023-2024 season, Albert scored one goal and kicked seven shots on goal.
So, why are fans calling for her name to be left out of the Olympic squad? It has nothing to do with her playing tactics, style, or prowess.
Korbin Albert Finds Herself In The Middle Of Drama
The USWNT, and Emma Hayes, the new manager who just recently took over for Vlatko Andonovski, have had their first issue under the newly appointed gaffer. The entire organization as a whole has been criticized for including Korbin Alert on their roster for the Olympics just months after it surfaced that she had shared, liked, and posted anti-LGTBQ+ social media posts.
Despite being an integral part of the squad and truly controlling the midfield when she is on the pitch, fans would have preferred someone else to take her spot. Alex Morgan was shockingly left off of the final squad list, a veteran player who has been on the team since she was a teenager. Albert was given a spot over Morgan, one of the pioneers of the new generation of women’s football.
But, the USWNT is trying to back the current squad members they have chosen for this international tournament. The team’s social media posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) a photo of Korbin Albert for her selection, stating that she calls “Paris home.”
Unfortunately, trying to ignore the issue or put a band-aid on the bigger problem at hand is not working for the USWNT, Emma Hayes, or the team. The selection is still receiving backlash and tons of comments on social media that are calling for answers and reasons why.
“Can’t wait to hear the boos through the tv!! I’ll be booing from home!”
Another person wrote, “Is it one of God’s miracles if she gets injured?”
Korbin Albert On The USWNT
Emma Hayes backs Korbin Albert, at least on the pitch. It seems pretty indefensible to back someone who ‘likes’ posts wishing their former teammate, Megan Rapinoe, to have a career-ending injury.
“First of all, we know Korbin making the team is on merit in terms of what she offers for us in the midfield positions … .There’s no denying there’s been a lot of work that’s been going on in the background to work with Korbin. As I’ve expressed on several occasions, I think it’s really important that everybody in this team understands the importance of not just being tolerant and respectful, and understanding the things that matter to all of us.”
Emma Hayes states that Korbin Albert is a young player who needs to learn the repercussions of her actions and how social media posts can be especially daunting. She did not go into great detail about how they are helping Korbin Alert learn from her mistakes, but she has made it clear the team is a positive environment and everyone is treated fairly.
Korbin Albert played for the underage U.S. teams, making her first appearance in 2023 against China in a friendly in December 2023. Since then, she has made ten more appearances and has earned her spot in the 18-player squad for the Olympics in Paris this year.
