RCB’s Virat Kohli faced a fine of half his IPL 2024 match fees due to his disagreement with the umpire’s call.
The IPL statement didn’t detail the reason behind the fine. But it’s probably linked to his response after getting dismissed for 18 off 7 balls. It happened during RCB’s pursuit of 223 runs.
His dismissal occurred in the third over when he was caught and bowled by Harshit Rana off a high full toss, despite being outside his crease. It was a slower delivery that seemed to be dipping on the batter.
Even though it was above the waist height when Kohli made contact with it. He felt the delivery should have been called a no-ball. But the new Hawk-Eye ball-tracking technology to determine such decisions ruled it as a legal delivery.
Kohli Fined by BCCI For Umpire Outburst
“Mr. Virat Kohli, Batter, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, has been fined 50 percent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024,” IPL said in a statement.
This IPL statement clearly shows that Kohli committed a Level 1 offense under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. The former RCB skipper also confirmed the offence and accepted the match referee’s sanction. “For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the statement added.

Why Kohli’s Dismissal Was Not Given a No-Ball
Kohli was caught and bowled off a high full toss from Harshit Rana. While having played the ball well outside his crease. It was a slower delivery that was dipping on the batter. Even though it was above the waist height when Kohli made contact with it. He felt the delivery should have been called a no-ball. But the new Hawk-Eye ball-tracking technology to determine such decisions ruled it as a legal delivery.
According to the technology, the ball would have passed the batter at 0.92 meters from the ground. If Kohli had been upright at the crease. The height of Kohli’s waist had been measured beforehand at 1.04 meters. This means the ball would have passed below his waist had he been on his crease and not outside it, making it a legal delivery.
Kohli was unhappy with the decision. And was seen expressing his displeasure to the on-field umpire, along with the non-striker Faf du Plessis. He also thought it should have been a no-ball for height.
“Obviously, the rules are the rules,” RCB captain du Plessis said after the game. “Virat and I at that stage thought that possibly the ball was higher than his waist. I guess they measure it on the popping crease. In those situations, you’ll always have one happy team and one team that doesn’t feel like it’s quite the right decision. But that’s just how the game works.”
RCB went on to lose the game against KKR by one run, and are bottom of the points table with only one win in eight games.
