Carlos Mendoza Rules Kodai Senga Out for 2024 Regular Season

Kodai Senga, New York Mets

The New York Mets have had a tough season with the health of right-handed ace Kodai Senga as he has been battling through injuries to get on the mound. After making his 2024 regular season debut on Friday, he left the game with a left calf strain, which landed him on the 15-day Injured List. However, the injury seems more severe than originally thought. While speaking to the assembled media ahead of Saturday’s game, New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza announced that it is pretty fair to say that Kodai Senga is going to miss the remainder of the regular season with this injury.

Kodai Senga missed the first 102 games of the 2024 regular season with a right shoulder capsule strain in Spring Training. Immediately after Friday’s game, Carlos Mendoza described the feeling to see Senga leave with an injury.

“You hate to see him go down like that, especially after what he’s been through the whole year. People will step up if he’s down, but we’ve got to wait and see what we’re dealing with.” h/t AP

The New York Mets currently hold the top NL Wild Card spot and are 9.0 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East standings entering play on Saturday.

Will the New York Mets trade for a starting pitcher after the Kodai Senga news?

Losing Kodai Senga for the remainder of the regular season is a brutal loss for the New York Mets. With the team struggling to get outs from their bullpen, losing their star pitcher will be tough going forward. However, president of baseball operations David Stearns has proven to add to the team ahead of the trade deadline with the likes of relievers Ryne Stanek and Phil Maton already for the bullpen. Now with the playoffs in sights for this team, adding a starting pitcher could be in the works.

However, they certainly do not have to as below is their current projected starting rotation as things stand:

  1. Sean Manaea
  2. Luis Severino
  3. Tylor Megill
  4. David Peterson
  5. Jose Quintana

This team has the pitching staff to do well but adding a veteran to bolster the rotation would certainly help. With the likes of Jack Flaherty, Cal Quantrill and Erick Fedde being potential targets, this could really help the New York Mets improve the starting rotation with Kodai Senga ruled out for the year.
