The USMNT Could Be After Jurgen Klopp for Berhalter Replacement

Jurgen Klopp has only recently turned in his Reds uniform for retirement – or so we thought. Klopp might be done coaching the Premier League squad as they go for the trophy, but he might not be finished with managing a team just yet. After all, Klopp solidified himself as one of the best managers of all time, rivaling the likes of Pep Guardiola and Mourinho during his time at Anfield.

It is no wonder that other clubs, or countries, want Klopp to be in charge of their team so they can win trophies and build a comprehensive culture in the dressing room. After the USMNT’s poor showing in Copa America, the United States could be asking if the Germans could come over and help their team for the foreseeable future.

Klopp is a fantastic manager in terms of player welfare, substitution, and keeping a positive culture in and around the club. He recently retired from coaching at Liverpool after a glorious track record, plus managing legends like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. Now, he could be heading to the USA after the United States put out feelers for him to manage the national team after Berhalter’s firing.

Berhalter was fired, rightly so, after a very poor showing in Copa America this past month. He has been under fire for some time now due to his squad selection and player management but has retained his job. Now, after a group stage exit on home soil, there is little to be said for just how poor they did in this tournament — the playing speaks for itself.

The United States Soccer Federation is desperate to find a well-respected coach who can turn around the national team and the youth system to turn the USA into a powerhouse in soccer. But it seems as though Klopp might not be the man for the job. Jurgen Klopp turned down the first offer from the United States to manage the men’s national team, denying the chance to enter formal discussions for the role.

The German coach took a break from coaching and quit Liverpool because he was running low on energy. You could see the commitment to managing a high-level team and the constant scrutiny, pressure, and elation all took a toll on him over the years. He needs a break from soccer to find the joy in it again, and potentially return to the game.

But managing the USWNT is a high-stress job that is just too soon for this well-respected leader.

Even if Klopp isn’t the man for the job, the U.S. did the right thing in sacking Berhalter — and they should have done it sooner. He has been pretty abysmal for the coaching system in the United States for the past few years, making bad player selections, having horrific player management, and earning a losing record with talented athletes.

Cindy Parlow Cone, the U.S. Soccer President, and ex-USWNT player, stated that they are looking to the future.

We are now focused on working with our sporting director Matt Crocker and leveraging his experience at the highest levels of the sport to ensure we find the right person to lead the USMNT into a new era of on-field success.
