Dallas Mavericks Shooting Guard Klay Thompson reportedly suffered a preseason injury on Thursday night. Thompson, 34, was reported to have overcome his nerves and butterflies in his stomach before the Mavericks’ preseason game No. 2 against the Utah Jazz at the American Airlines Center, but success seemed to come with a cost.
Some, if not most fans, are still getting used to seeing Thompson in an NBA uniform other than a Golden State Warriors one. Thompson’s first appearance in a Mavericks uniform might’ve put plenty of pressure on him. He was playing for a new team while embarking on a journey to achieve a redemption season. Here’s the latest on Thompson.
Klay Thompson’s Performance In Preseason Game No. 2
Before the Dallas Mavericks’ preseason game against the Utah Jazz, Klay Thompson rested during the Mavericks’ preseason game No. 1 against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. Thompson told ESPN, “I’m just excited to experience a new chapter … It’s going to be special. I just know it.”
Thompson finished the game with 10 points and three assists while shooting 3-for-5 from the field goal line and 3-for-5 from the three-point line. The Mavericks lost to the Jazz 107-102. Thompson’s three-pointers were one of the game’s highlights, even if his three-point performance wasn’t similar to those in the Splash Brothers era in the Bay Area.
Klay Thompson Experienced Discomfort After the Game
The Dallas Mavericks vs. Utah Jazz preseason game resulted in a second straight loss for the Mavericks, but there’s more to know, as Klay Thompson reportedly experienced discomfort after the game. The Mavericks returned to practice after a tough 102-102 loss to the Jazz, and Head Coach Jason Kidd updated the media about Thompson’s status.
Kidd told Bolavip, “He did the walk-through, did some stuff on the floor … Then he got his treatment, so we will see how he feels tomorrow.” The Smoking Cuban’s Noah Weber recently reported that Thompson said that his back “tightened up” after the game, but he said he’ll be “ready to go” in the Mavericks’ preseason game No. 3 against the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night.
Thompson Isn’t the Only Injured Player in Dallas
Klay Thompson’s injury is a huge blow to the Dallas Mavericks’ backcourt and roster. However, Thompson isn’t the only injured player in Dallas, as Mavericks Power Forward PJ Washington reportedly suffered a hip injury. Washington participated in a no-contact practice on Saturday, according to CBS Sports.
When asked about Washington’s status, Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd responded, “He’s been great. He got some work in today, he will get some work in tomorrow … We will see how he feels for Monday.” Washington’s hip injury was reported to not be considered serious.
Klay Thompson and Washington join Luka Doncic (calf), Brandon Williams (calf), Kessler Edwards (ankle), Maxi Kleber (ankle), and Dante Exum (wrist) on the Mavericks’ injury list. Kidd’s headaches might be increasing off the court, as the Mavericks have been preparing for 2024-25 success while the list of sidelined players continues to grow. It’s unclear if the Mavericks’ status as an NBA Finals contender is “safe.”
