The Dallas Mavericks’ new shooting guard Klay Thompson has ended the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty of Thompson, Stephen Curry, and Draymond Green. The 13-year run in the Bay Area can be described as productive, as the former Splash Brother became a four-time NBA champion over 13 years. All dynasties will eventually end, and the Warriors’ dynasty was no exception. Thompson reportedly signed a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks for a change of scenery in Dallas, Texas. His new contract has been emotional for Warriors fans, media members, and employees, but beneficial for both parties.
The one half of the Splash Brothers wasn’t going to be able to play at an elite level forever. But the sudden appearance of his demise is odd for many basketball fans who are used to him being one of the best two-way players in the league. Thompson hasn’t helped much in Curry’s leading the Warriors to become a playoff team as in 2015, 2017, and 2018. That said, the 34-year-old helped the Warriors by signing with the Mavericks.
Draymond Green’s claim about Klay Thompson
The Golden State Warriors might’ve hoped Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Stephen Curry would retire as members of the organization, but this wasn’t the case following Thompson’s departure. Thompson now has the opportunity to compete for his fifth NBA championship as one of the newest members of the Dallas Mavericks.
Green recently claimed on the Club 520 podcast that the former Washington State product did the Warriors a favor by signing with the Mavericks. After Thompson’s departure, Golden State used cap space to sign players such as Buddy Hield, De’Anthony Melton, and Kyle Anderson. Golden State’s attempts to bring in multiple talents are going well.
Green said, “What Klay just did — and nobody will give him credit for — is he just relieved this organization of the financial hardships it was starting to face. He still did it for the organization, but nobody will say that. Nobody will say him leaving was because he was unhappy, which, again, he wasn’t the happiest last year.” Green continued, “He provided cap relief for this organization on his way out. You know what I’m saying? He got some picks sent back to the organization on his way out.”
Klay Thompson receives payday in Dallas
Klay Thompson is now a member of the Dallas Mavericks, a team looking to repeat as Western Conference champions and advance to the 2025 NBA Finals. The Golden State Warriors reportedly footed a hefty bill to maintain Thompson’s contract to maintain the core of the past dynasty while trying to complement all of them.
It’s hard to fault a veteran champion for looking to get paid. Especially after sacrificing in terms of his role and a lot of the credit that went toward team success, he felt it was time to benefit a little more from his efforts. Luckily his new team was in a win-now position and had the cap flexibility to pull this off. Had he stayed in the Bay Area, the conflict of paying the aging stars and going in on emerging talent was becoming too much.
Decision could lead to new possibilities
The Golden State Warriors owners haven’t been shy in spending money to keep the good times rolling. But with the collective bargaining agreement’s “second apron” implementing restrictions on high-spending teams, Golden State would’ve been in a tight spot had they handed Thompson his desired new contract. Thompson’s decision to sign with the Dallas Mavericks might’ve stung his teammates and fans, but provides the Warriors with financial flexibility as a parting gift. Plus Thompson struggled with his shot, along with his new role with the Warriors, in recent times.
