This upcoming Sunday, Golden State Warriors stalwart Klay Thompson will officially be a free agent. It’ll be the first time the guard has ever hit free agency, and it will be interesting to watch. Thompson has won four rings with the Warriors organization and has been a key to the success they have built. His fellow Splash Brother Steph Curry is the star of the show, but there is no question that Thompson has done great things for the team.
Golden State Warriors and Klay Thompson In Standstill
The Golden State Warriors played their last game on April 16th. Since then, there has been no movement in contract negotiations between the team and Thompson. It seems like the two have hit a wall. The guard is no longer as efficient as he used to be, so it’s most likely that GSW doesn’t want to offer him the contract that he is looking for.
Despite his age and decline in play, Thompson will probably be looking for a decent amount of money. If the Warriors can’t see this through, his best decision might be to leave. There are many teams searching for a veteran presence, especially one that can shoot like Klay Thompson. His 2023-2024 season stats consisted of 17.9 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game, and 2.23 assists per game, with a field goal percentage of 43.2. He’s still very capable of getting the job done, and though Golden State might not pay him, other teams will.
It’s clear that the Warriors organization still wants to work with Thompson. Head coach, Steve Kerr, made a statement on the matter a few days ago on the Jim Rome Show, saying:
I want him back desperately. And we will have our conversations and he’s got to make whatever decision he makes, but we really want him back. He’s Klay Thompson.
Philadelphia 76ers Looking At Thompson
It was a rough year for the Philadelphia 76ers as Joel Embiid had a rocky road with injuries, and the team fell out of the playoffs in the first round. There’s no doubt that they’ll be looking to add some new talent to the roster. If Thompson can continue to shoot well, he could be a solid pickup for the Sixers.
Obviously, they have a star veteran presence in 30-year-old Embiid, but with his injuries occurring every season, it would be good to have another one. Thompson had a huge stretch of 941 games with no basketball a few years ago. Since then he hasn’t been the same player, but the past few years have shown consistent play and that he can still be a reliable guy. His playoff experience and winning culture could also be great for a team that has struggled heavily to make it through the playoffs.
Denver Nuggets Free Agency Replacement
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope recently declined his player option with the Denver Nuggets and is now an unrestricted free agent. The shooting guard has been solid from three with the Nuggets, as he holds a three-point percentage of 40.6 this year. With him leaving, Denver will be in search of another hot shooting guard.
Thompson could be a great asset to the team. With Nikola Jokic consistently piling on the points, having Thompson around to get some quick threes would definitely be a great boost. Thompson is also used to working with a superstar in Curry, so he probably wouldn’t have a problem to passing the ball to Jokic consistently. Klay Thompson could be a great free agency pickup for the team.
