Keanu Reeves, known for his iconic role in the movie Speed, starring alongside Sandra Bullock, recently added professional auto racing to his resume. On Saturday, he debuted at the two-day racing event with Eagle Canyon Racing powered by Fast Track with Youtuber and Sports Enthusiast Cody Jones of Dude Perfect. The Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR) Cup for amateurs was held at the famed Indianapolis Motorspeedway. Reeves is no stranger to professional auto racing, competing in and winning California’s Long Beach Toyota Grand Prix in 2009, but he didn’t find himself as lucky on Saturday.
What Went Wrong Over the Weekend?
The actor spun out about midway through the nearly 45-minute race on Saturday into a grassy area but walked away unscathed. He effortlessly jumped back in and continued driving car No. 92, which he dedicated to his graphic comic series Bezerker, featuring a shameless immortal warrior. Despite the hiccup, his car sustained no damage, and he managed to place 25th out of a field of 35 and 24th on Sunday after initially qualifying 31st and ranked as high as 21st during Saturday’s race.
Keanu Reeves has always been a racing fan, so it’s not surprising that he participates in racing to some degree and has attended notable events like the Mottorad Grand Prix Deutschland in Germany and the Formula 1 British Grand Prix in 2022. The thrill of the experience is what it does for him, particularly how drivers enter and exit turns at such high rates of speed. He had a front-row seat at the British Grand Prix, joined by a wet track due to rainy weather, and expressed that the speed, coupled with the rain, added to the excitement, and there’s no doubt he’ll attend more. Who knows, maybe he’ll even race in one.
“It was wet, but it was thrilling,” he said about the event at the time,” He mentioned in a statement to Express UK.
“It was absolutely amazing to be that close. Silverstone and rain, perfect,” he added. “I think being that close to it, just seeing the speed and the way that they’re going at the turns and exiting the turns is something unbelievable.”
Is There a Future in F1 Racing for Keanu Reeves?
Stemming from his fascination and love for Formula 1, Keanu Reeves will release a docuseries on Disney and Hulu + entitled Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story. The four-part docuseries, released on November 15, 2023, tells the story of Ross Brawn, a former F1 team principal who overcame financial and staff shortages to beat out some of the top names in the sport. Formula 1 greats Jenson Button, Christian Horner, CEO Ross Brawn, Rubens Barrichell0, and Honda CEO Nick Fry are featured in unscripted interviews detailing their experiences on and off the track.
Keanu Reeves asked the Formula 1 legend about their thoughts on how Brawn relished success from a team he paid a single pound for and turned it into constructor Brawn GP, a 98.5 million pound empire. So it’s abundantly clear that by paying homage to Brawn, he is remaining connected to racing when he’s not on the track participating and watching, so is it possible he’s eyeing a future in Formula 1? It’s a possibility, especially considering his evident love for the sport and recent debut at Indianapolis Motorspeedway at the Indy 8-hour precursor event.
Final Thoughts
Keanu Reeves’ racing debut at the two-day Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR) cup over the weekend was impressive but not as successful as the actor hoped it would be. However, his love for the sport and talent could perhaps thrust him into a different racing discipline like Formula 1, so he may be seen on the track in this fashion at some point. It would certainly be interesting to see him behind the wheel of an open-wheel vehicle for a change.
