Kansas Jayhawks With Historic Loss To BYU Cougars

Kansas

The Kansas Jayhawks had a historic 91-57 loss last night on the road against the BYU Cougars. Kansas made multiple pieces of negative history in Tuesday night’s loss. It was the first time the Jayhawks had lost by 30+ points to an unranked opponent since the AP Poll began in 1948-49. BYU also handed the Jayhawks their worst loss of the Bill Self era. Will Kansas be able to recover with postseason play around the corner?

Kansas Jayhawks Season Summary

It has been a nightmare season in Lawrence, Kansas. The Jayhawks have been a perennial National Championship contender under Self. Unfortunately, during the 2024-25 regular they have looked far away from a champion. The most glaring issue for the team has been their performance in Big 12 play. Kansas is now 17-9 and was surprisingly ranked No. 23 in the most recent AP Poll. They were ranked so generously due to a track record of success, not their performance this season.

The Jayhawks started the season relatively well, but have fallen on tough times going 3-5 in their last 8 games. KU’s offense has been middling this season. They are 149th in points per game, 61st in field goal percentage, and 184th in three-point percentage. Their defense has been much stronger this season. They are 64th in points allowed, 12th in opposing field goal percentage, and 25th in opposing three-point percentage. With a defense that is so good, it is very disappointing the Jayhawks have struggled so much.

Final Thoughts

KU returns to the court on Saturday when they welcome Oklahoma State to town. With five games left before the Big 12 Tournament, the Jayhawks are running out of time to right the ship. If they bow out early in postseason play and struggle to end the regular season, a low seed in the NCAA Tournament is coming.
