Kansas City Chiefs Place Marquise Brown On IR

Kansas City Chiefs

The latest news in this disappointing run for the Kansas City Chiefs is that wide receiver Marquise Brown will undergo shoulder surgery next week and go on injured reserve. That will put him out for at least four weeks and possibly much longer. Let’s break down what led to this situation, what it means for the team, and how the Chiefs plan to move forward.

Background on Marquise Brown’s Injury

Marquise Brown, the one-year $7 million signing with the Kansas City Chiefs, received a shoulder injury on August 10 in the game between Kansas and Jacksonville. While trying to make a catch, he experienced a dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint. The team was hopeful of Brown recovering in time for the beginning of the season. He never did quite heal as anticipated, and a follow-up recently revealed the bone had shifted into place, an indication of the need for surgery.

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said a good initial recovery was tempered by the fact that movement of the bone made surgery the obvious course of action. Surgery will be performed on Monday in Vail, Colorado after the decision to operate was made in collaboration with multiple doctors.

The current shoulder injury by Brown is one of those that easily brings to mind a similar dislocation by former Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill in 2019 while in Jacksonville, which kept him out for four weeks. Injuries have been part of Brown’s six years in the NFL-from his foot, ankle issues, and knee problems; these continuous health problems somewhat eclipse his talent and promise.

Despite those setbacks, Brown, when healthy, flashed some brilliant skills. He had a great year with the Ravens back in 2021 when he caught 98 passes for 1,008 yards. In his career, he’s logged 313 receptions for 3,644 yards and 28 touchdowns in 72 games. This injury is frustrating news, especially with hopes that a successful season with the Chiefs could have positioned him for a more lucrative contract next year.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ Reaction and Adjustments

Without Brown, the Chiefs are going to have to adjust their game plan. Luckily, they’ve already worked without him through the brunt of training camp and the early portion of this season. Team coach Andy Reid was very clear about his disappointment but also confident in team depth.

Add that to Rice and Worthy, as the Chiefs also have JuJu Smith-Schuster, Justin Watson, Mecole Hardman, and Skyy Moore as all veterans who bring an immense amount of experience and skill to the team, which no doubt will be utilized in filling the gap that Brown has left. They could also think about promoting practice squad players such as Justyn Ross, Nikko Remigio, or Montrell Washington.

This was a tough blow taken by Marquise Brown, but the Chiefs have a strong roster and game plan to fall back on. Certainly, it will require some retooling by Coach Reid and the remainder of the staff, but there is reason for optimism based on the talent at hand. The depth the Chiefs have at wide receiver should keep them competitive while working through this tough time in the season.

Marquise Brown’s forthcoming shoulder surgery and move to IR is no doubt a setback, but with a complete roster rounded out by multiple quality receivers, the Chiefs seem primed to overcome the setback. Ultimately, expectations should remain in place for business as usual for the Chiefs while one of their more important skill players is out.
