The Kansas City Chiefs traded away star wide receiver Tyreek Hill back in 2022. Since then, the team has been struggling to find stability at the position. While it hasn’t hindered their winning at all, Patrick Mahomes has struggled to put up league-leading numbers the past few seasons. They have tried many different players, but between injuries and poor performance, nothing has stuck. The team decided to bring back former first-round pick Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, signing him to a one-year deal.
Kansas City Chiefs Bring Back Hollywood Brown
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports it is another one-year deal for the former Baltimore Ravens first-round pick, worth up to $11 million. Brown signed with the Kansas City Chiefs last offseason but missed most of the year due to a shoulder injury. In the limited time he was on the field, he showed what he can do in the Andy Reid offense. He played in two regular-season games and caught nine passes for 91 yards and added another five catches for 50 yards in the postseason.
Brown really didn’t have time to get acclimated with the offense. On the field, he was still getting back up to game speed. Getting thrown into a playoff setting on a team you’ve never played for his a tall task. However, the Kansas City Chiefs clearly still believe Brown can be a dangerous weapon in their offense.
Deep Threat
The lack of a deep threat on offense has affected the Kansas City Chiefs for the past few seasons. What made Hill so dangerous in the offense was that he would draw two defenders deep, giving players like Travis Kelce more space underneath. With no deep threat, teams could sit on the underneath routes. Brown and Xavier Worthy will make opponents honor the deep ball. The issue now may not be the wide receivers but the offensive line.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line got destroyed in the Super Bowl. They then traded one of their best offensive linemen, Joe Thuney, to the Chicago Bears, likely because he was going to be too expensive to keep. This is a massive question about how the team will protect Mahomes and allow players like Brown and Worthy to take the top off the defense.
Final Thoughts
This is a good deal for the Kansas City Chiefs. They get another high-upside player on a cheap deal. If it doesn’t work out, the team isn’t tied to him in the long run. With how bad they looked in the Super Bowl, it’s easy to forget this team has won the AFC for three straight years. Can they retool the roster and make it a fourth?
