Kalen DeBoer ‘Proud’ Of Alabama Crimson Tide Team After Close Win

Alabama Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer

Kalen DeBoer had an impossible task this season. He replaced one of the greatest coaches in college football history, Nick Saban. However, the first part of the season looked promising. The team beat Georgia in an early season matchup and rose to number one in the AP Top 25 poll. Things have been less convincing in the past two games. The Alabama Crimson Tide lost to Vanderbilt for the first time in decades. This week, they squeaked out a win against South Carolina at home. It has left fans wondering whether Alabama is a serious contender. DeBoer is focusing on the positive side, saying he was “proud” of the team after the close win.

Kalen DeBoer On The Alabama Crimson Tide Win

It looked like the Alabama Crimson Tide recovered from last weekend early in the game. They jumped out to a 14-0 led by suffocating defense and Jalen Milroe making plays. South Carolina went on to score 19 unanswered points to make it a close game. Alabama controlled most of the fourth quarter but still needed a failed two-point conversion to hang on for the win. Kalen DeBoer praised his team for finding a way to win.

“There just so many times when we talk about finding a way to win. The ball wasn’t bouncing our way. But when you find a way to win when your backs against the wall like it was on the last drive there, I’m proud of these guys.”

There is some truth in this line of thinking. The SEC is a tough conference. South Carolina has had one of the best defenses in the conference this season. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how you get the win. Coaches would rather win ugly than take the loss. The Alabama Crimson Tide have plenty to work on, but Kalen DeBoer is happy they were able to get back on the winning side, even if it was close.

Doesn’t Get Easier From Here

The next three weeks are all tough matchups. Next Saturday, the Alabama Crimson Tide head to Rocky Top to take on the Tennessee Volunteers, who also escaped with a win against the Florida Gators. Then they head back home to take on the Missouri Tigers who have been ranked in the AP Top 25 all year. They won’t get time to rest as they travel to Baton Rouge to take on hated rival LSU. Kalen DeBoer will find out a lot about his team in the next few weeks. If they go on a losing streak, the Crimson Tide could be on the outside looking in.

Kalen DeBoer knew this year would be difficult. The SEC schedule is brutal no matter what year it is, but this year has been especially tough. We’ve seen upsets every week, and no team is safe. However, whether it is fair or not, fans in Tuscaloosa expect to be in the mix for a national championship. Next week is another huge game for the team, and if they want to win on the road, they will need to play better than they did on Saturday.
