Kadarius Toney Trying New Position In Camp

Kadarius Toney

Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Kadarius Toney has been a polarizing figure in the media over the past couple of seasons. He was acquired in a trade from the New York Giants during the 2022 season. The Giants gave up on him quickly. General Manager Joe Schoen did not draft Toney, Dave Gettleman did. Toney was a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the New York Giants out of Florida. Last season with Kansas City, he caught 27 passes for 169 yards receiving and one touchdown, along with averaging 6.3 yards per reception.

He also had 31 yards rushing on 11 carries and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 2.8 yards per rush. Toney has been on the roster with the Kansas City Chiefs the last two years when they won Super Bowl titles. However, he was not on the field at all for them last postseason. Against the Buffalo Bills last season, he was offsides on a crucial play that negated a Chiefs touchdown and there was outrage about that play.

Many NFL fans, including New York Giants fans, have bashed how bad Kadarius Toney is. There has been beef with Toney and the Giants fanbase in the past. They find it quite funny when he drops a pass or fumbles the football. Toney is 25 years old, but who knows how much longer he will be on the Kansas City Chiefs roster.

Andy Reid Is Trying Him At Running Back

Kadarius Toney

Reid is always a creative mind on offense. He is trying to give Kadarius Toney some reps at the running back position. Head Coach Andy Reid feels like he saw success at the running back position last season for Toney. This is most likely a translation for this his last chance to make the Kansas City Chiefs roster.

At the moment, Isiah Pacheo and Clyde Edwards-Helaire are the top two running backs on the roster. They do not have much depth in the running back position. Kadarius Toney making the roster as a running back and not a wide receiver would be very interesting. Toney is currently listed on the second unit for the wide receiver position on the depth chart.

The projected starting wide receivers for the Kansas City Chiefs at the moment are rookie Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, and Marquise Brown. It is an upgrade from a season ago. Justin Watson and Mecole Hardman are predicted to be the backup wide receivers on the Kansas City Chiefs roster. If Kadarius Toney does not make the roster, Skyy Moore, Justyn Ross, or Cornell Powell will take his spot on the roster.

Where Will Kadarius Toney Fit In?

The last game that Kadarius Toney played in last season was against the New England Patriots on 12/17. In that matchup, he only caught two passes for five yards receiving and was targeted four times in that game. There were points last season where quarterback Patrick Mahomes was not happy with him.

Kansas City’s offense was so much better when he was not on the field last year compared to when he was. Tight End Travis Kelce raved about Kadarius Toney when he first came to the team, but it went downhill from there. It was hard for the Chiefs to replace Tyreek Hill at first last year, but it did not stop them from going back-to-back.

Toney is a very talented wide receiver, but he has never put it together. If there is no room for Kadarius Toney to make the roster, then his NFL career could very well be in jeopardy. This is why Andy Reid is trying him at the running back position to see what he has left in the tank.
