Before UFC 300, Justin Gaethje was a BMF Champion of UFC. The contender of the main event was Max Holloway against Gaethje and at the end of the fight in a few seconds, Holloway knocked out Gaethje and earned his BMF Championship title along with lightweight contender No 1.
After being knocked out at UFC 300 it was a hard 5 months for the former champion. After the champion of the BMF title was knocked out he is now considering retirement and the chances of his retirement would increase a lot if his upcoming fight also turns out to be like this one.
Fight of Undisputed Championship
Although Gaethje has clarified the situation in which he would take his retirement, he also knows that this is not the time for his retirement. The perfect example of this situation is Tony Ferguson because he lost 8 fights before he hung up his gloves, so Gaethje probably wouldn’t want to end up like Ferguson because that becomes a dark spot in your career.
Justin Gaethje said this to the audience. “The direct quote was, ‘Once I know that I cannot win an undisputed championship belt or fight for one, then I might as well hang up the gloves. I do not believe I have reached that point. Whether I’m the champion or not in the next – Who knows? It’s so hard to predict.”
Future Fights of Justin Gaethje
Despite the latest loss to Max Holloway, Gaethje has already shifted his focus to a future fight he has in mind and the possible candidates he’s planning on challenging are Dan Hooker, Charles Oliveira, Dustin Poirier, and Alexander Volkanovski. Holloway and Volkanovski are both big names but Volkanovski is already eyeing a featherweight title rematch with Ilia Topuria if he passes through the title defense rematch with Holloway.
Justin Gaethje expalined his retirement in more clear words. “If I ever go to sleep, like I just went to sleep, I’m done. I’m not doing it two more times. I’ll do that one more time if I have to, I’m not choosing that, but it’s always a possibility, and if it happens, I’m done. But outside that, I don’t know, it’s hard to put a number.”
On the other side, the audience is also waiting for the trilogy of Poirier vs Gaethje fight inside the Octagon. Especially their trilogy became more interesting after Justin concluded their last fight at UFC 291 in July of 2023 with a KO. Most of their fights were so fascinating due to the action-packed nature of the fighters. But before that in their first fight, Poirier defeated Dustin with TKO in the fourth round of this iconic fight that was held in UFC on FOX 29 in April 2018.
Final Thoughts
Justin Gaethje is 35 years old, normally fighters retire at 40 years of age but every fighter does not have the same body and mindset. Mostly when a fighter reaches 40 he has lost a lot of fights but earned a lot of money, Justin Gaethje doesn’t seem to follow that pattern.
But after all Justin Gaethje will remembered as one of the greatest fighters who has ever stepped into the Octagon as he has faced many great fighters like Khabib, Conor, Dustin, and many more.
