Jurickson Profar Suspended for 80 Games for use of Illegal Substance

Jurickson Profar

Jurickson Profar was suspended today for 80 Games under Major League Baseball’s PED policy. The Atlanta Braves leadoff man tested positive for Chorionic Gonadotrophin, also known as hCG. HCG is a fertility drug, but it is a popular masking agent for performance-enhancing substances. The substance has been used as far back in MLB as 2009 when Manny Ramirez was suspended for testing positive for hCG. Profar had a now suspicious career-best season last year, slashing .280/.380/.459 with 24 home runs.

What this means for the Braves Playoff Hopes

Profar is ineligible to return to the team until June 29. Most importantly, he will not be allowed to play in the postseason this year for the Braves. The Braves will have to look elsewhere this season for a consistent bat at the top of the lineup. Atlanta is coming off a disappointing and injury-filled 2024 season. They had hoped the outfielder could help their offense return to its formidable 2023 form.

Profar Apologizes to Braves, Fans

Shortly after the MLB announced the suspension, Jurickson Profar released the following statement:

“I want to apologize to the entire Braves organization, my teammates, and the fans. It is because of my deep love and respect for this game that I would never knowingly do anything to cheat it. I have been tested my entire career, including eight times last season alone, and have never tested positive. I would never willingly take a banned substance, but I take full responsibility and accept MLB’s decision.

“I am devastated that I won’t be on the field with my teammates for the next 80 games. I look forward to competing again at the highest level this season upon my return.”

Atlanta signed the former Padre to a three-year contract worth $42 million in the offseason. Profar has appeared in 4 games so far this season.

Final Thoughts

This is an unfortunate development for an Atlanta Braves squad that’s expected to compete in a World Series. Although the Braves have a famously deep lineup, they may look for someone they can play in the outfield in the playoffs to replace Profar. The Braves are 0-4 and head to Los Angeles to face the
Dodgers in a 3-game series.
