Juan Soto has been off to a red-hot start for the New York Yankees, and he didn’t disappoint on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
Soto hit two home runs, and Yankees starter Luis Gil totaled 14 strikeouts. All that, along with homers from Jose Ramirez and Giancarlo Stanton, led New York over the Chicago White Sox, 6-1.
The game helped Soto smash out of a 4-for-31 slump, one of his lone down periods in the Bronx. His two home runs came off of White Sox starter Brad Keller. Soto added an RBI single, a walk, and another single.
Confident Yankees
“It was a fun day,” Soto told MLB.com after the game. “I was definitely working on my swing, trying to find that feeling again where I was hitting the ball in the first month, getting that feeling back and getting that confidence back.”
How good was this game for Soto? It was his 18th career multi-home run game. He’s now batting .317 for the season, totaling 11 homers and 37 RBIs. Soto also joins teammates Aaron Judge (12) and Stanton (11) with double-digit homer totals.
“It’s a really confident group right now,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “It is really good to see them doing it in all ways.”
Juan Soto Spent Time Working on His Game
Prior to Saturday’s game, Juan Soto was tinkering with different things in his batting stance. It’s no secret that hitters like Soto can snap out of slumps by working on their mechanics.
“You’ve got to put in the work,” Soto said. “I’ve been working on my swing, working with my hitting coaches, watching videos — trying everything that we could to get that feeling back. I think we are in a good spot.”
The White Sox jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Andrew Benintendi doubled to left field, scoring Tommy Pham. But that was the end of the team’s scoring.
Keller (0-4) went four innings, giving up seven hits, six runs (five earned), one walk, and four strikeouts. The White Sox are now 14-32 on the season.
Luis Gil Stood Tall for the New York Yankees
Gil (5-1) went six innings, giving up five hits and one earned run. He was in total command of the strike zone, though. Those 14 strikeouts kept Chicago’s offense in check.
With the win, the Yankees stayed in first place in the American League East at 32-15. Boone had a lot of good things to say about Soto’s day at the plate. “I could just see his body language, really locked in today,” Boone said. “It’s just one of those days that Juan is capable of.”
Soto has been in the news this week. There’s been some scuttlebutt about locking him into a longer-term deal. He’s got a one-year deal with the team. With his fast start to this season, they might want to keep him around. But they will have to talk to Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, about it.
The Yankees and White Sox will wrap up their weekend series in the Bronx on Sunday. New York hopes its lineup will continue providing solid pitching and timely hitting.
