Jrue Holiday’s trade from the Milwaukee Bucks is regarded as an overnight success. On the Draymond Green Show, he described the scenario that led to him leaving the Bucks unexpectedly. The Buck’s General Manager, Jon Horst, called Holiday at night to inform him about his trade to the Blazers.
When Jrue Holiday joined the Bucks in 2020, his performance on the team helped the Milwaukee Bucks win their first NBA Championship in 2021 after experiencing a trophy drought for 50 years. However, the Bucks’ desperate trade favored the two-way guard as the Bucks aren’t in the 2023-24 NBA Championship finals, making it three years since they added to their 2021 ring.
Holiday’s Performance On The Bucks Vs. The Celtics
It might be too early to make this comparison. However, we can’t ignore the Renaissance painting on the wall, as Jrue Holiday’s performance couldn’t be ignored this 2023-24 NBA season, especially in the postseason games.
When the Milwaukee Bucks acquired Jrue Holiday from the New Orleans Pelicans in 2020, the next year, they won their first NBA title and finished 3rd (46-26) in the Eastern Conference that season with Californian point guard averaging 17.3 points, 8.7 assists, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game. He was a good complement to the Greek Freak, Giannis Antetokounmpo, because of his ability to have clutch games and play both sides effectively. Also, his presence at the Bucks balanced the team’s offensive and defensive pressure to promote good player rotation.
It was also a shock to NBA spectators that Jrue Holiday was traded off to the Blazers. Some applauded the move while others criticized the move. Now, the critique is even louder, making the Bucks rethink their strategy. Holiday has played one season for the Boston Celtics and brought the Championship charm he gave to the Bucks – in 2021, a year after his arrival – to the Celtics. Currently, Holiday is playing in the 2023-24 Championship Finals against the Dallas Mavericks on June 6, 2024. He averaged 12.7 points, 4.6 assists, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game with 61.4 TS% to help the Celtics sweep the Indiana Pacers, winning four games out of four.
Jrue Holiday’s Unexpected Trade From The Milwaukee Bucks
The trade happened overnight to lay a foundation for Holiday’s overnight success, which he didn’t see coming. The Bucks were desperate for another NBA title, and thus, they entered a three-way trade with the Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns.
The Bucks hungered for the presence of the shot-creating point guard, Damian Lillard, ignoring Jrue Holiday’s impact in the previous years. On the other hand, Portland desires to uphold a long-term rebuilding strategy; thus, letting go of the All-Star point guard to acquire younger players from draft picks was an attractive deal.
Milwaukee Bucks traded Jrue Holiday and some other first-draft picks on Sept. 27. Swimming in shock and confusion, Holiday was clueless about what would become of his career at the Portland Trail Blazers. However, four days after the Trailblazers acquired him, Holiday got traded to the Boston Celtics. Thus, his overnight success story started there as the Bucks watched at home.
