Third seed Iva Jovic scored the first upset of the day in girls’ singles against American counterpart Valerie Glozman. The third seed won 6-4, 6-4 in the match. Service breaks and long rallies characterized the undulating match. Breaking Glozman to open the match, Jovic closed the first set with an authoritative backhand winner.

In the boys’ category, top-seeded Nicolai Budkov Kjaer of Denmark eked out the match in a thriller against Romanian Luca Preda. Budkov Kjaer trailed after losing 1-6 in the second set but came back strong to take it 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. Budkov Kjaer served well, although his second serve was thrown awry all through the match.

Jovic, Budkov Kjaer in Semifinal

Jovic has been having quite the run through the semifinals. In addition to her junior single victory, she also participated in the US Open in women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. To say the least, what might have been intimidating scenarios against veterans simply tempered her resolve even further. Jovic will face off against Great Britain’s Mika Stojsavljevic in the semis after Stojsavljevic also pulled out a great performance in her quarterfinal match.

Budkov Kjaer will now be up against Great Britain’s Charlie Robertson in the semifinals. Robertson advanced to this stage with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Swiss qualifier Flynn Thomas. The forthcoming encounter will again measure Budkov Kjaer’s endurance and capabilities.

Juniors’ Semifinals Set for Action

The girls’ singles semifinals will see Jovic face Stojsavljevic, with seventh-seeded Wakana Sonobe competing against eighth-seeded Mingge Xu. Xu’s advancement over second-seeded Tyra Caterina Grant was the most surprising of all, battling past a tight second set to earn a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 victory.

Junior doubles top seeds Maxim Mrva and Rei Sakamoto survived American wild cards Matisse Farzam and Nikita Filin in an entertaining match tiebreak. Their winning match came at the end of a saved match point in a truly dramatic fashion, a true reflection of the level of competitiveness likely experienced during the junior double event.

Well, with the junior semifinals at hand, all eyes are on these great future professionals. One thing is quite certain: Jovic and Budkov Kjaer are not done with the 2024 US Open Junior Championships as yet, since there are enthusiasts everywhere who are watching with bated breath to see them through to finals, and hopefully victories, in their respective categories.
