Josh Allen’s Time to Silence The Critics

Quarterbacks have the highest positional value.

If there is one thing for sure in Buffalo Bills country, they love their quarterback. Over the past six years, Josh Allen has taken his city and team on his shoulders and made them a consistent winner. Throughout his young career, Allen has developed into one of the NFL’s most elite players. Unfortunately, there are a few prognosticators and naysayers who don’t quite agree.

Josh Allen’s Critics Become More Apparent

Many players come under scrutiny during the off-season and none more so than the Buffalo Bills Josh Allen. The past several months have brought some questionable criticism to the Bills play-caller. At the start of training camp this July an anonymous NFL Executive called Josh Allen “one of the most overrated players in the NFL”. Soon after hearing of the article, General Manager Brandon Beane fired back “There’s idiots everywhere” calling the Bills quarterback underrated if anything.

On a different front, ESPN recently surveyed 103 NFL players on who they believed to be the most overrated player in the league. Oddly enough, Josh Allen headed the list of QBs with 11 votes. Allen took the results in stride saying in part “When other players don’t like me that means I must be doing something right”

Josh Allen Has Always Struggled For The Recognition He Deserves

Josh Allen has always had to go the extra mile to get the recognition he deserves. Allen started his college career at Reedley College, a small junior college in central California. Wanting to move up to Division 1 football, Allen emailed every college coach and coordinator he could think of, looking for a chance.

Josh Allen’s exhausting effort paid off when the Wyoming Cowboys showed serious interest. Head Coach Chuck Bohl took a chance on the 6-foot 5-inch 230 lb quarterback and it paid huge dividends. In the 27 games started by Allen, he threw for 5,066 yards and 44 touchdowns. He also added 767 yards on the ground with 12 more TDs.

Buffalo Moves Up to Take Allen

After making a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to move up from 12th to 7th in the 2018 draft, the Bills selected Josh Allen. While two quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield were drafted ahead of Allen, It would be hard to find a Bills fan who is disappointed.

The Numbers Speak For Themselves

Josh Allen has been putting up some amazing numbers since he became the Bills starter. The QB has taken his team to the post-season in each of the last five years while compiling a 63 – 30 record. During that span, Allen was one of the top five candidates for the league’s MVP in three of those years.

Over the past four years, Allen has led the league with the most combined rushing and passing touchdowns with 173. The QB is second over that span in combined yards with 20,010, only trailing Patrick Mahomes with 20,448.

Last year alone, Josh Allen led the league with 44 touchdowns and 4,830 total yards. He managed to have a rushing and passing TD in 11 games and his 15 rushing TDs set a new NFL record equalled only by the Eagle’s Jalen Hurts.

Allen Compared To The GOAT

Compared to who many say is the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady, and Josh Allen’s numbers speak for themselves. After each of their first six seasons as a starter, Allen has more passing yards 22,703 to 21,558, and passed for more touchdowns 167 to 147. The running game is not even close with the Bills QB rushing for over 3,000 yards and 50 TDs more than Brady.

Final Step In Quietting The Critics

It is easy to showcase the amazing numbers that Josh Allen has put up. His statistics through his first six seasons have surpassed many of the greatest quarterbacks. However, there seems to be one common denominator that is allowing his peers to continue their criticism, a Super Bowl victory. Once the grand prize is achieved, and the Vince Lombardi Trophy has a new home, the critics can move on to someone who deserves it.
