The former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho claimed that he didn’t get support from the players, fans, and staff during his tenure. The self-proclaimed “special one” has been comparing his managerial time with the Dutch manager and the current Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag.
Although Jose Mourinho has won two cups for Manchester United during his time and got them to great heights, two of the managers after Jose Mourinho’s era Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick have failed to achieve silverware for United. After two and a half years of tenure, Jose Mourinho even mentioned the Manchester United squad’s toxicity and non-competitive mentality.
On the other hand, Erik Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup last year, with two FA Cup final appearances. Somehow the Premier League and the Champions League fixtures have been harsh for the 20-time Premier League winners as they have been getting rattled up by big teams.
Jose Mourinho even mentioned his friend from the Man United accountant staff Ed Woodward saying:
“My relationship with Ed Woodward was good,” Mourinho said. “Good as in the personal point of view. Even now we sent an SMS. But from a professional point of view, it was not the best.
“I am who I am. I am a football man. Ed comes from a different background and what Ten Hag has in his time at Manchester United I didn’t have. I didn’t have that level of support. I didn’t have that level of trust.
“So I left sad because I felt I was at the beginning of the process. In some moments, I felt if they trusted me and believed in my experience things could be different.”

Jose Mourinho felt surprised and sad due to the trust Erik Ten Hag had got instead of him. The Portuguese icon has won two Champions League, one with Porto and another with Inter Milan. He has won 26 major trophies while managing different top clubs including three Premier League titles. Erik Ten Hag’s biggest achievement in the Champions League is reaching the Champions League Semi-Finals with Ajax back in 2019.
One of the probable reasons Jose Mourinho got hate during his time as the Manchester United manager is because he claimed few of the players during his time were lazy and unproductive. Therefore, the upliftment of the fanbase of these players during that time was skyrocketing.
Jose Mourinho came to Man United in 2016. During that time the squad was not as good to be expected. Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Rashford, Lingard, Pogba, De Gea, Mata, and Ander Herrera, etc were the players who were part of the Man United squad in 2019.
Somehow the results were not in favor of Jose Mourinho for most of the time. Due to the lack of passion and aggression, the squad made very unremarkable events for the team. Somehow Erik Ten Hag has a lot to achieve for the team despite the tensions between the squad and the fans the Dutchman is not yet comparable to the “Special One”.
