Jose Benavidez Sr. Expresses Keen Support for Past Rival

Jose Benavidez Sr.

Trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. recently commented on Edgar Berlanga’s upcoming bout against Canelo Alvarez on September 14th. He also expressed his joy at Berlanga’s selection by Canelo for the next title defense of three super middleweight belts. However, this joy is coupled with a bit of confusion and tension, and this is because Berlanga, a few days ago, accused him of being a hypocrite.

A few weeks ago, an unbeaten Brooklyn-based 27-year-old Edgar Berlanga with a record of 22-0, 17 KO’s, a mouthy kid who recently had it with him, whom he called a hypocrite. Berlanga suggested that while Jose Benavidez Sr had a negative thing to say about Canelo selecting him as an opponent, he was polite to him personally. Consequently, the candidate’s father stopped his criticism and explained that he was happy that Berlanga won the fight and prayed to his competitor to win. He says if Berlanga can knock out Canelo, even more doors will be opened to other fighters, namely David Benavidez, his son, whom Canelo has constantly ignored.

As for the main event, Berlanga has been vocal about wanting to get a shot at David after the one with Canelo. He even said he would be willing to face him at 168lbs, which he categorized as a huge fight that would generate a lot of attention. Canelo was expected to fight Berlanga next, but the fight did not happen in the end. Benavidez Sr., however, did not show the same excitement for the Canelo vs Berlanga bout. He also does not view it as a fight that will appeal to fans, he is not sure whether Berlanga is ready to battle a fighter like Canelo at this stage in his career.

Benavidez Sr. Interview on the Fight

Although not happy, Jose Benavidez Sr. directed his congratulatory message to Berlanga for winning the fight against Canelo. He congratulated Berlanga on his power and age and said that he still believed he could record a stunning upset.

There was a hint of bitterness from him though when he said that for him it was not a big fight, however, he was quick to note that many people would be watching the fight. The fight, he said, is captivating and could be the biggest one since the third bout between Canelo and GGG. Berlanga also had some harsh words for him and his son, but he claimed to hold no grudge against the Puerto Rican star and even wished him well. However, the tension between them may have started when Jose Benavidez Sr. was angered by Canelo’s choice of picking Berlanga over his son, who had been hoping to fight Canelo for five years.

Conclusion

In the end, Jose Benavidez Sr.’s emotions are not simple to explain. Still, this scene shows a situation in the life of a fighter when professional respect and admiration occur together with pride and career agendas. As for the case of Berlanga facing Canelo, although he can back up this fight, he clearly has a hidden grudge or frustration that his son, David Benavidez, has not had his promised fight yet. This will be a high-stakes fight for Berlanga, and thus, the boxing community will closely observe how this fight will turn out.
