Jorge Masvidal made his first BMF fight against Nate Diaz in 2019, where he brought the BMF (baddest mother f****er) title and became the first MMA fighter in UFC history to do so. At that time, UFC President Dana White decided that the belt presented to Masvidal by Dwayne Johnson, known as the Rock from WWE, would be delayed.
The unique division would soon be removed, but things didn’t go as planned. The BMF title went viral among the UFC fans and remains in the UFC still. After Jorge Masvidal, Justin Gaethje was the title holder as he knocked out Dustin Poirier in the second round of their fight.
Different Champions of BMF
showed a great performance at that time, where he delivered one of the best knockouts of his career. Holloway looked at Gaethje and placed his hand on the ground, challenging him to stand up and fight. The historic moment was when Holloway threw a punch, and the next moment we saw Gaethje lying on the ground.
That’s how we have a new ‘BMF’ champion in the division. Even though Max Holloway is still the holder of the ‘BMF’ title, he is looking out for other big fights that can let him be a two-division champion at the same time. He will fight Ilia Topuria in the featherweight division next.
Max Holloway Pushing for Other Fights
Immediately after the victory over Gaethje at UFC 300, Holloway demanded a rematch against the featherweight champion for a chance to become the new featherweight champion after losing the belt to Volkanovski previously. This will be a money fight for UFC, and Dana White will do his best to promote it in the perfect way.
Masvidal is not looking forward to getting involved in this rivalry, but he respects Holloway a lot. And if he accepted the fight after Ilia, then it would be one to watch out for. The difference in division would make it a little harder.
Jorge Masvidal said this about the upcoming fight: “Me and Max could do some serious shit out there. One of the greatest fights ever. One ‘BMF’ has the quickest knockout ever, and the other ‘BMF’ has the latest knockout ever in a fight. It was at 4:59 in round five. So many interesting [parts] to me and Max fighting.”
Final Thoughts
If we analyze the division, then we understand that Holloway has mostly competed in the 145-pound division, but he has gone up to the lightweight division a few times, including the historical fight against Gaethje. On the other hand, Jorge Masvidal began his mixed martial arts career at 155 pounds but has been in the welterweight category in recent years, notably saying he cannot drop weight again.
Dropping weight is usually very hard, especially after someone is in their 30s, and the best example of it was the fight of Alex Pereira against ‘Izzy’. However, fighters have been changing history in unexpected places, and Jorge Masvidal might also do it again. He understands that the whole point of having the ‘BMF’ title is to be willing to step in and fight at any given time and for any promoter. He also respects other fighters who do not dodge fights and tries not to either.
