Jordan Walsh Impresses In Boston Celtics Preseason

Jordan Walsh dazzled during the 2024 NBA Preseason.

With the Boston Celtics preseason ending, Jordan Walsh has been turning heads with the organization and the fans. Entering his second NBA season, Walsh displayed tremendous improvement in the preseason games, causing many to speculate on his role for the Celtics this season. He spent most of his rookie year in the G-League, playing for the Maine Celtics, but is looking to carve out a spot on Boston’s 15-man roster and the regular rotation. The Boston Celtics are already a deep team, but Jordan Walsh’s impressive preseason will be hard for the team to ignore.

Jordan Walsh’s Development

In Jordan Walsh’s rookie year, the second-round pick only played nine games with the Boston Celtics. In those nine games, Walsh started once and averaged 9.2 minutes per game with 1.7 points. So, it was not much to write home about or get a significant gauge on Walsh at the NBA level. But in the G-League, Walsh played 28.7 minutes per game, averaging 14.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.5 steals. He also shot 34.1% from three. But, with very little time on the Boston Celtics 15-man roster, Jordan Walsh was written off as someone who needed more time to develop and grow.

However, in the preseason, Jordan Walsh’s play began to get people’s attention. In the Celtics’ first two preseason games against the Denver Nuggets in Abu Dhabi, Walsh got significant minutes with the bench unit. One of the main bench lineups that the Celtics used in these games was Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, Jaden Springer, Neemias Queta, and Jordan Walsh. Besides Walsh, all these players were on the Boston Celtics’ 15-man roster last season. In the first preseason game, Walsh played 25 minutes and had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks.

In the Celtics third preseason game against the Philadelphia 76ers, Jordan Walsh impressed again, with 11 points, going 3-of-3 from three in just 12 minutes. But his best performance came against the Toronto Raptors when Walsh started and had 16 points and 10 rebounds. This preseason was a significant turning point for Jordan Walsh, where many began to notice his improved play. His shooting has improved, and his length and athleticism make him a threat attacking the basket and in transition. His defense has been strong since his time in college at Arkansas, and he now looks to be putting together the remaining aspects of his game.

The Boston Celtics Rotation

Jordan Walsh has shown tremendous growth this preseason, but the Boston Celtics are still a team with significant depth. Luke Kornet, Payton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, and Xavier Tillman were all part of the Celtics playoff rotation, so barring injury, they will likely continue to play. That only leaves a few spots in the Celtics rotation up for grabs. Neemias Queta will also be available for center depth, with Kristaps Porzingis missing time.

So, Jordan Walsh will be battling for minutes with the likes of Lonnie Walker IV, Baylor Scheierman, Drew Peterson, and others, depending on who makes the 15-man roster. With Walsh’s length and defensive ability, he could get more minutes depending on the game. If he can continue to improve on his three-point shooting, that will also do him favors. But, regardless, Jordan Walsh’s play in the preseason has opened many eyes among the Celtics organization and fans, showing flashes of greater potential.

Final Thoughts

Jordan Walsh’s development has been one of the biggest takeaways from a preseason where the Boston Celtics went 4-1. He showed dramatic improvement, stringing together multiple good games with strong performances. Now, Walsh and the Celtics fans wait for the official 15-man roster to be named. From there, Jordan Walsh’s position on the team will be much clearer.
