Anaheim Ducks Goalie John Gibson always appears to be rumored in NHL offseason trades. The Ducks once again this year failed to qualify for the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Anaheim is currently in a rebuild and they hope to get back to the playoffs one day. Gibson is under contract for three more seasons with the Ducks. His current cap hit, according to Spotrac, is $6.4 million per season. Many teams in the NHL could use goaltending help. Last season, he played in 46 games and had a 13-27-3 record with a .888 save percentage and a 3.54 GAA, along with zero shutouts.
John Gibson has regressed over the last couple of seasons, but he might be a goalie who could use a fresh start. The Anaheim Ducks do not have a great defensive core by any means. Gibson could go to a team that has more defensive structure and make his life a lot easier than it currently is in Anaheim. If they were to trade him, they would need to acquire another goalie in the same trade because the only other goalie on the roster is Luke Dostal.
There are NHL teams that are still looking to make trades before the start of the 2024-2025 season. Goaltending across the league was down last season. Only a few teams in the league are really happy with the goaltending on their roster. The Florida Panthers, the Tampa Bay Lighting, the Dallas Stars, and the New York Rangers are a few teams in this league that have elite goalies. Which teams could use John Gibson for a fresh start?
Pittsburgh Penguins
John Gibson is from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area and has been rumored to be traded to the Penguins for quite some time. Tristan Jarry has also been rumored to be traded this offseason. Would a Jarry for Gibson swap be a good idea with Alex Nedeljkovic as the other goalie on the roster? It would be interesting if Kyle Dubas pulled a move off like that. The stats may not be ideal for John Gibson, but he has more talent than Jarry does. The only reason why Pittsburgh would maybe not trade for him is because they have goalie Joel Blomqvist waiting in the minors to take over the starting job eventually.
Philadelphia Flyers
The only goalies on the Philadelphia Flyers roster are Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov. It has felt like years since the Flyers got the goalie situation right. They had Carter Hart on the roster last season until he had to stop playing hockey because of a Team Canada sexual assault case. Hart and other several NHL players were involved in it. Hart was playing much better last season for them before that event.
Ersson took over as the starting goalie for the Flyers last season for Hart. They fell flat down the stretch after a hot start. John Gibson playing for the Philadelphia Flyers and not for the Anaheim Ducks would be an interesting fit. Philadelphia plays a defensive structure very well under Head Coach John Tortorella.
Chicago Blackhawks
The Chicago Blackhawks were one of the worst teams in the NHL a season ago. Chicago is in the midst of a long rebuild, but Connor Bedard will be the star player that they will be building around for many years. John Gibson as the starting goalie for the Blackhawks would sound better for them rather than having Laurent Brossoit, Petr Mrazek, or Arvid Soderblom. The Blackhawks will not be much better in 2024-2025, but John Gibson could maybe revive his career with Chicago. They have not had a good goalie since Corey Crawford.
