John Cena is Completely Set On Retiring in 2025

John Cena WWE

At Money in the Bank 2024, WWE legend and future Hall of Famer John Cena announced that he would be retiring from in-ring competition. Considered by many as the greatest of all time, the star made it public that 2025 will be his last active year in the WWE, and that he will have a farewell tour before he retires.

“The 2025 Royal Rumble will be my last. The 2025 Elimination Chamber will be my last. And I’m here tonight to announce that in Las Vegas WrestleMania 2025, will be the last WrestleMania I compete in,” said the 16-time world champion at the Premium Live Event. In an interview following this retirement announcement, Cena confirmed that he has officially made his mind up and will not wrestle past 2025.

John Cena Isn’t Looking Back After 2025

John Cena WWE

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, John Cena made it clear that his mind has been made up and that he will no longer be wrestling after 2025. There won’t be any one-time appearances or a paycheck big enough for him to return as he wants to keep his promise to the fans who have been watching him for over two decades.

There isn’t a check writer with enough money to change my mind. When I hang it up in December, it isn’t something — I don’t want to continue for ego or financial gain. I built a relationship of trust and authenticity over the years with the WWE, and that’s people who think I suck and people who believe in me. They know that I shoot them straight and I’m trustworthy. I mean what I say. And when I’m done in December, I am done. It is the last time I will perform in a ring.(H/T F4W Online)

With this being said, John Cena’s last match will officially be in the upcoming calendar year. There was speculation regarding when exactly the star will retire as in his Money in the Bank retirement announcement he didn’t give any updates past WrestleMania 41 until this interview. However, although he made it public that he will wrestle until December 2025, there are still questions that fans have such as whether or not he will be wrestling full-time and how many matches he will have.

How Many Matches Will John Cena Have in 2025?

What was once speculation are now questions that have been answered by John Cena, as he has been giving information that fans have been asking for regarding his retirement tour. In an interview with Collider, Cena gave the exact details regarding how long his farewell tour will be and how many matches he will have. He also explained how he would make sure that the WWE is his top priority as he has cleared up his Hollywood schedule.

‘I have given the calendar year 2025 to WWE. I am retiring in 2025, and I start that farewell tour in January and I’ll end it in December. It’s gonna be right around 36 dates around the world to pay thanks and gratitude to the WWE audiences around the world. So, that’s what I’m doing in 2025.’ –  John Cena via Collider

This means that fans might see John Cena’s last match on a Friday Night Smackdown or a Monday Night Raw unless the WWE decides to hold a special PLE in December. December has not seen a PLE since 2020, so if they were to confirm an event around that time in 2025, John Cena’s final match would likely take place at whatever PLE that may be. It’s still unknown who exactly John Cena will face during this farewell tour, though he has pitched some names such as Gunther.

Final Thoughts

It’s officially confirmed that arguably the greatest professional wrestler of all time is heading into his final year of in-ring competition, so it will certainly be a memorable run for both John Cena and WWE fans. It’s unknown whether or not John Cena will wrestle at every PLE, but it is confirmed he will be wrestling on weekly television given the number of confirmed matches in this run. The legend has cleared up his schedule to dedicate his time completely to wrestling, which means that he will be returning to full-time status for the last time ever.
