Full Story: Joel Embiid Shoves Philadelphia Inquirer Columnist

Joel Embiid shoved a columnist after he disagreed with his article.

The Philadelphia 76ers played the Memphis Grizzlies and lost the game. After the game, Joel Embiid and Marcus Hayes reportedly got into an argument that involved people trying to separate them. Also, this drama goes on as the Sixers and the NBA investigate the situation. Thus, what led to the altercation?

Origin Of Joel Embiid’s Altercation

Joel Embiid has not played for the Philadelphia 76ers since the beginning of the 2024-25 season. This happened due to his knee injury management program. In the course of missing these games a Philadelphia reporter, Marcus Hayes, wrote a column on the All-NBA center not wanting to play. Also, he mentioned his son and late brother.

“Joel Embiid consistently points to the birth of his son, Arthur, as the major inflection point in his basketball career. He often says that he wants to be great to leave a legacy for the boy named after his little brother, who tragically died in an automobile accident when Embiid was in his first year as a 76er.”

After introducing his article with Joel Embiid’s family, he continued with this statement: “Well, in order to be great at your job, you first have to show up for work. Embiid has been great at just the opposite.” Also, this statement was the final straw that led to the Embiid-Hayes exchange.

Embiid’s Exchange With Marcus Hayes

Embiid reacted to Hayes’ article about his player participation during a pre-game interview on the training floor. He stressed the sacrifices he has made for the Philadelphia 76ers despite his injury ordeals. “I’ve broken my face twice. I came back early with the risk of losing my vision.” Then he called out Hayes in his article, saying: “When I see people saying he doesn’t want to play, I’ve done way too much for this city, putting myself at risk for people to be saying that. I do think it’s b—t.”

The Philadelphia 76ers played against the Memphis Grizzlies and lost by a 17-point margin 124-107. After the game, reporters tried to hold a post-game interview with Tyrese Maxey when the altercation between Joel Embiid and Marcus Hayes started. Embiid warned Hayes about mentioning his family. According to ESPN, Embiid said: “The next time you bring up my dead brother and my son again, you are going to see what I’m going to do to you and I’m going to have to … live with the consequences.”

The altercation continued even after Hayes offered an apology. Yet, Embiid claimed this wasn’t the first time. With emotion in the air during the exchange, Embiid shoved Hayes, which led to others intervening in the argument. According to ESPN, the Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey said that they are aware of the situation. Also, the Sixers will take the incident seriously and will investigate it. The team has already spoken to the NBA.

Final Thoughts

The Philadelphia 7ers fans are not happy with Joel Embiid being out for five games. At first, his absence wasn’t an issue until the Sixers lost three of their first four games, which led to Marcus Hayes’ article. Yet, bringing Embiid’s son and late brother into his profession was when Hayes crossed the line. Also, if Hayes had focused on Joel Embiid’s player participation and injury concerns, this altercation wouldn’t have happened.
