Joel Embiid and Paul George’s Availability Against the Timberwolves

The status of Joel Embiid and Paul George is uncertain for the preseason.

Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey’s combo is the most anticipated lineup for next season. Tyrese Maxey appeared in the Sixers’ first preseason game against the New Zealand Breakers with a clinical performance. So how about Embiid and George? Will they be available against the Minnesota Timberwolves?

Joel Embiid’s Availability Update

Joel Embiid missed the 76ers preseason game against the New Zealand Breakers. Despite missing the game, the Philadelphia 76ers thrived throughout the game. The home team started their preseason run with a massive win and an encouraging team chemistry. After the game, Keith Pompey interviewed Nick Nurse on Embiid’s availability for this upcoming preseason match against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

“He’s not here,” Nurse said. “He’s at a scheduled assessment of his knee. That was always on the schedule. We are still waiting for what’s next.” Joel Embiid’s last appearance in the Sixers uniform was against the New York Knicks. During that period he was experiencing issues with his knee. Yet, the 2022-23 MVP admitted that he’s better during the offseason. Also, he played for Team USA Men’s Basketball during the 2024 Paris Olympics and had a stellar performance.

During the Sixers media day, the franchise made it clear that their focus will be on keeping Joel Embiid healthy for next season’s playoffs. Thus, one of the steps the Sixers are taking is minute restrictions for the big man. Also, President of Basketball Operations Daryl Moery loaded the Sixers team with vets and elite players to improve its depth. Thus, the Sixers won’t fall apart in Embiid’s absence.

Paul George’s Availability Update

Paul George was a crucial addition for the Sixers this offseason. His contract duration synchronizes with other members of the “Big Three,” Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid. Thus, there will be enough time for these All-Star players to bond on the court. The six-time All-NBA player would make his debut in the Sixers uniform against the Minnesota Timberwolves. In an interview with Keith Pompey, George expressed what he plans to achieve as he makes his debut for the Philadelphia 76ers.

“But I think more so just get some conditioning,” he said. “Try to really blow out my lungs, run the floor, all the intangible stuff. I think the talent, it will make its imprint as the season goes on and we get out of preseason. More so, I’ll be in my game. But it’s keeping up with [Tyrese Maxey], running the floor, giving him space. But like I said, it’s more so the intangibles this preseason”

This opportunity is a chance for the Sixers fans to observe how well George fits with the team. No doubt, the All-Star player is better than Tobias Harris, yet his integration with the Sixers team, especially with Tyrese Maxey, will determine Paul’s long-term role in the Sixers uniform. Also, the possibility looms that the nine-time All-Star won’t play much in the preseason, as his original plan was to stay healthy for the regular season.
