A remarkable work of Joe Root was in the Lord’s Test to make his second century in the match and the 34th in Test cricket. Root once again starred for his team with the bat scoring 103 in the second innings after his fabulous knock of 143 in the first innings, putting Sri Lanka in a virtually impossible position to chase a target of 483 runs.
It not only became the century of the most Test hundreds by an England player at Lord’s but it brought Joe closer to equalling Alastair Cook’s overall England run-scoring record. There was outstanding reliability and skill when he went on to bat and this served England a good platform in the match.
Joe Root Breaks Records
Joe Root dominated the century list at Lord’s and became the leading run-scorer of the Test era on this ground. He is now only 100 runs away from equalling Alastair Cook’s record of runs scored for England. While batting, he reached fifty off 65 balls and got more aggressive, hitting the spinner for three fours on consecutive balls.
Though he was particularly harsh on the Sri Lankan bowlers post-lunch. Joy Root’s fellow batsmen were getting dismissed, but Joe showed the best performance at the crease. In that innings, he got to the century from 111 balls, one of the quickest centuries in test cricket. Even though England’s approach appeared as though they were setting a declaration, he persisted with the batting and only got out when he was caught at deep backward square leg.
Wickets and Key Moments

During the morning session, England got the much-needed partnership from Joe Root and Harry Brook. As for England’s batting, only Joe Root could be considered as a star of the show. Other batsmen such as Ollie Pope; Dan Lawrence; and Chris Woakes could only muster small scores. Pope was bowled out for 17 when he played at a bouncer to be caught at deep backward point and Brook who was given out LBW early in his innings, went on to score 37 before being bowled by Prabath Jayasuriya.
Sri Lanka would have loved to restrict England to a lesser score but England went past the 150 mark while losing four wickets. Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis had hoped to return to the playing eleven, but that dream faded as the team struggled against Joe Root’s brilliance and early wickets. It must have been quite frustrating for Jayasuriya to go for 61 runs in his 10-over spell but at least he managed to get rid of Brook.
His innings were a mixture of good assured drives and equally assured sweeps. It would have been possible for him to get frustrated and play a reckless innings but he kept a cool head and his rate of runs was normal, thus leaving the other batsmen to play the big shots. Nevertheless, there were some falters now and then, however, Joe was composed in playing the innings which was very important for setting up the huge landmark meant for Sri Lanka to chase.
In Conclusion
This game seems to be in favor of the Englans so far due to the heavy burden of runs. Joe Root has batted well for England to set a good target for Sri Lanka to chase that’s why it’s difficult now. The responsibility lies on the shoulders of the Sri Lankan batsmen to perform and show resilience against English bowlers.
