According to Shams Charania’s report, NBA veteran Joe Harris announced his retirement from the NBA after playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Brooklyn Nets and Detroit Pistons. In his 10-year career in the league, Harris averaged 10.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in 504 regular-season games. As an elite shooter, he maintained a 43.6% shooting success from beyond the arc and won the Three-Point Contest in the 2019 NBA All-Star Weekend.

Born in Chelan, Washington, Joe Harris’s journey to the NBA was one of perseverance and determination. After an outstanding collegiate career at the University of Virginia, he was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft. During his first two years with the Cavaliers, he appeared in 56 games with only one start, averaging 1.5 points per game. He was dropped to Cleveland Charge in 2015, the Cavaliers’ G-League affiliate.
Despite experiencing a challenging time with the Cavaliers, Joe Harris eventually gained more opportunities to showcase his talent and received increased playing minutes in the Brooklyn Nets. He began to gain momentum in the 2017-2018 season when he recorded a career-high 21 points in a victory over the Miami Heat and then set a new personal best of 30 points against his former team, the Cavaliers. His performance continued to improve, highlighted by his clutch game-winning layup that secured a 134–132 victory over the Charlotte Hornets in December 2018.
In February 2019, Harris reached another career momentum by winning the Three-Point Contest during the NBA All-Star Weekend, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s elite shooters and marking the prime of his NBA career. Though making a notable impact for the Nets to clinch the playoffs that season, his shooting struggles across five games of the first round against the Philadelphia 76ers faded the effort away.
Harris re-signed with the Nets in November 2020 and continued to break records, including becoming the franchise’s fastest player to hit 100 three-pointers in a season. On October 27, 2021, he surpassed Jason Kidd to become the franchise leader in career three-pointers, a testament to his sharpshooting legacy in Brooklyn. However, Harris’s later seasons were marred by injuries. After suffering a left ankle injury in November 2021, he underwent multiple surgeries, which ultimately sidelined him for the remainder of the 2021-22 season. These injuries overshadowed his contributions and limited his impact during crucial playoff runs.
Injuries Result in Joe Harris’s Retirement
It’s convincing that Joe Harris’ strength was shattered after going through multiple surgeries, resulting in his struggle to get his form back. In the 2022-23 season, his last season with the Brooklyn Nets, Harris produced a lower-productive 7.6 points per average though playing 74 games. In that season’s playoffs, he only recorded 1.8 points on average.
As he transitioned to the Detroit Pistons after being traded in July 2023, Harris struggled to regain his previous prowess and failed to become a consistent piece of the roster. He was waived in February this year.
