JK Dobbins Fantastic Career at Ohio State 2017-2019

Los Angeles Chargers Sign Former Ravens RB JK Dobbins

JK Dobbins was one of the best running backs in Ohio State history. Before turning professional, He spent three seasons with the Buckeyes from 2017 to 2019. The Baltimore Ravens would select him in the 2020 NFL draft. He signed a new contract this offseason with the Los Angeles Chargers. However, this article will focus on his college career. He was the only Buckeye running back to accumulate 2000 yards in a season, and his records may never be touched.

Dobbins was recruited out of high school in La Grange, Texas. As a freshman in 2017, Dobbins had 194 carries for 1,403 yards and seven touchdowns.  As a sophomore in 2018, Dobbins had 230 carries for only 1,053 yards and 20 touchdowns. In his junior season in 2019, Dobbins had 301 carries for 2,003 yards and 21 touchdowns.

In his career at Ohio State, he averaged a gaudy 6.2 yards per carry, caught a few passes (71, to be exact), and averaged 6.4 yards from scrimmage.

Dobbins was essentially not tackled while he was at Ohio State.  It was this way the entire time he was in college, and his relatively low yardage during his sophomore season mostly had to do with many of his runs ending in the end zone. Dobbins’ monster junior year was perfect for his last college season before he was drafted, as it boosted his draft stock.

Dobbins Gets Drafted

JK Dobbins was a highly-rated draft prospect coming out of Ohio State because of his monster junior season. He was drafted 55th overall in the second round of the 2020 National Football League draft. It was a little surprising that he fell so far in the draft, but this is likely because of the poor history of Ohio State running backs in the NFL.

Dobbins has overperformed expectations in the National Football League. In five seasons in the NFL thus far, he has rushed for 1,613 yards on 216 carries. He has scored 14 touchdowns as a professional. He did not play football in 2021 due to an injury. He tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the final preseason game of the season and then missed the entire season. He has played for the Baltimore Ravens, who drafted him, and the Los Angeles Chargers just this season.

The average career for a running back in the National Football League is less than four seasons, but Dobbins seems healthy this season in Los Angeles.  He is the feature running back and is being used quite a bit. It is funny that his current head coach is Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh was the long-time head coach for the University of Michigan—Ohio State’s biggest rival. Professionalism makes for strange bedfellows.

Conclusion

JK Dobbins had a fantastic college career. His records at Ohio State may never be broken, even though Ohio State currently has two great running backs. Dobbins has been a little less stellar as a professional. How could he not? After some serious injuries during his time in Baltimore, he is healthy now. He should have a great career and should play for several more seasons.
