Jerry Rice is Outraged After His Son is Drafted in the 7th Round

Jerry Rice is Mad After His Son Goes in the 7th Round

There is no doubt that Jerry Rice is the greatest wide receiver in the history of the National Football League and maybe its greatest player ever. No one has more receiving yards, touchdowns, or receptions than Rice. So when he says he’s unhappy about something in the game, we all take notice.

Jerry Rice’s son, Brenden, was taken in the seventh round of this year’s NFL draft in Detroit last month by the Los Angeles Chargers. Brenden said it was “very frustrating” to wait so long, but his father was a bit more animated. “My dad was hot,” Rice laughed to reporters at the Chargers’ rookie minicamp. “The first words he said was, ‘Time to go to work.’ He said, ‘I will be with you every step of the way.'”

Can Brenden Rice Make an NFL Roster?

New Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters his team had Rice ranked as a third or fourth-round pick, so it was a steal to get him so late. Brenden Rice said it motivated him and his father.

The elder Rice said, ‘Now, I’m going to be involved with all of your workouts from now on, and we have a lot of people to prove wrong, a lot of teams that go ahead.’ It’s going to be one hell of a story; that’s all that I’m going to say.” Rice had his most productive year at the University of Southern California in 2023. He had 45 receptions for 791 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Trojans.

The scouting report on Rice says he’s a physical wide receiver. “Rice catches with quick, strong hands and good extension to help with frequently contested catches.” The younger Rice says he’s confident he can compete for a spot on the 53-man roster this season, but he is not a lock.

The report does say he has some challenges to overcome. “He lacks sudden feet, so beating press cleanly and separating on short routes could be challenging as a pro.”

Big Losses for Chargers May Create Room on the Roster

Superstar quarterback Justin Herbert will have new targets in 2024 after losing his two top receivers, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. The Chargers released Williams, who was due $32 million this year, in a move that helped clear cap space. Williams also tore his anterior cruciate ligament and played only three games last season.

Keenan Allen is now a member of the Chicago Bears. He will be a target for the number one pick in the draft, quarterback Caleb Williams, who was Brenden Rice’s QB at USC. The Chargers traded Allen after he refused to take a pay cut.

2023 first-round pick Quentin Johnston is their top receiver right now, and the Chargers expect a breakout year from him.

The Chargers drafted Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey in the second round and have several young receivers in camp this season competing for a roster spot:  Josh PalmerDJ Chark, Derius Davis and Simi Fehoko. that could help Rice find a spot on the roster.
