Jayson Tatum has played exceptionally well through the first three games of the 2024-25 NBA season. He has led the Boston Celtics to a 3-0 start with two 37-point games and one 25-point game. After an underwhelming playoff run and Olympics, Jayson Tatum came into the new season with much to prove. But, thankfully for Celtics fans, Tatum has not taken long to prove the doubters wrong. His jump shot looks better and he is back in form.
Jayson Tatum’s Dominant First Quarters
A large part of Jayson Tatum’s impressive start to the season has been his play in the first quarter. Tatum has made an immediate impact in each of the Celtics games. On opening night against the New York Knicks, Jayson Tatum had 15 points in the first quarter. He did this on 5-of-7 shooting and also had five assists. Then, against the Washington Wizards, Tatum had 14 first quarter points on 5-of-9 shooting. Against the Detroit Pistons, Tatum scored 17 in the first quarter, shooting 6-of-9.
Jayson Tatum has put up double-digit points in each first quarter and done so on efficient shooting. Also, most of his scoring has come from his jump shot. Tatum is shooting the ball with confidence and the shots are falling. One thing he has done particularly well is exploiting mismatches. Where most players would rather switch onto a smaller defender, Jayson Tatum has been hunting the opposing centers. Against the Wizards, Tatum converted multiple shots off the dribble when defended by Alex Sarr. He did the same against the Pistons when switched onto Jaren Duren.
While shooting over a seven-footer is not ideal, Tatum has been utilizing his quickness to get separation off the dribble to get his shots up. These first quarter performances from Jayson Tatum have helped the Boston Celtics build an early lead in each of their first three games. Against the New York Knicks and Washington Wizards, the Boston Celtics cruised to dominant victories. That dominance began in the first quarter, where Jayson Tatum has led the way for Boston.
Leading the Way
Jayson Tatum’s hot start to games has been helpful, but Tatum has been impactful throughout the game. Against the Knicks and Wizards, the Celtics won by large margins, so Jayson Tatum did not play during the fourth quarter. But in a close fourth quarter versus the Detroit Pistons, Jayson Tatum made multiple big plays down the stretch. Tatum made a clutch fadeaway shot to give Boston the lead, which allowed them to seal their third victory of the season.
In the Celtics’ first three victories, Tatum has been all over the box score. On opening night, Jayson Tatum had 37 points, 10 assists, and 4 rebounds in 30 minutes. In Washington, he scored 25 points with 11 rebounds and 6 assists in 29 minutes. And in Detroit, Tatum had 37 points again with 4 rebounds and 2 steals. His scoring dominance has fueled the Boston Celtics and his confidence. After a shaky shooting performance in the playoffs and a benching in the Olympics, games like this are great to see. Jayson Tatum’s jump shot is falling again and the Boston Celtics and their fanbase could not be happier about it.
Final Thoughts
Jayson Tatum’s first three games of the 2024-25 NBA season have been excellent. He is currently averaging 33.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game. He is shooting 54.7% from the field and 48.6% from three. While three games are a small sample size and the numbers could likely drop, it is still impressive. Jayson Tatum is playing and shooting at an elite level and the Boston Celtics are 3-0. If Tatum can continue to produce at this level, then the Celtics could be even more dangerous.
