Tonight, the Memphis Grizzlies took on the Philadelphia 76ers in the Salt Lake City Summer League. One rookie, Jaylen Wells, had a fantastic game. The Grizzlies spent the majority of the game down. However, it was a fourth-quarter surge that brought them back into the game. The 76ers crumbled and ended up losing the game. The Grizzlies won 87-85 with a game-saving buzzer beater from Wells. For those looking for a reason to watch Summer League ball, look no further than this exciting game.
Bring Jaylen Wells His Flowers

Wells was drafted No. 39 in the second round of the draft by the Memphis Grizzlies. Their first-round pick, Zach Edey, got a large amount of hype on Twitter, but it’s time to acknowledge the show Jaylen Wells put on. It was a 27-point night from the rookie that helped push Memphis forward. He also had a steal, six rebounds, and three assists.
The 76ers managed to tie the game at the end of the fourth thanks to two free throws from Ricky Council IV. However, this wouldn’t end up being a problem for Memphis, thanks to Wells. The 20-year-old managed to grab a rebound off of a miss from Isaiah Miller. Quickly, he put the shot up with .3 seconds left on the clock. It was a shot that would end in celebration for the team.
76ers Lose Due to Major Lead Slip

Quarter one ended with the Philadelphia 76ers on top 31-17. The second quarter had a completely different feel, with the Grizzlies surging and tying it 41-41. The third quarter was a back-and-forth that ended with the 76ers in the lead 67-65. Lastly, the fourth quarter was a complete decimation of Philadelphia’s game. Halfway through, the Grizzlies had outscored them in a massive way, and all the 76ers could do was try to hang on.
Despite the loss, Jeff Dowtin Jr. had an impressive game, scoring 18 points to go with six assists and a block. Top draft pick Jared McCain had an okay night, giving the team 12 points and a steal. However, he did have four turnovers. He’ll have to learn to protect the ball better. McCain had a good debut, so no one should be worried about this game. 76ers fans should be happy so far with how he has done.
No Edey, No Problem
Memphis Grizzlies rookie Zach Edey wasn’t present in this game, but that didn’t cause any issues, and the Grizzlies starters showed up and showed out. 2021 undrafted player DeJon Jarreau was locked in this game as he had 12 points, one block, two steals, four assists, and eight rebounds. The 26-year-old played with a great amount of energy during his 25 minutes on the court.
Stepping up as well was Cam Spencer, who played 35 minutes and had 18 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Spencer was drafted at No. 53 in the 2024 NBA Draft, and he’s proving to be a nice pickup for the team. In the loss against the Utah Jazz, Spencer scored 11 points. The seven-point improvement is great to see. Hopefully, as he gets more comfortable in the league, his stats will continue to grow.
With the fantastic push from Wells, Jarreau, and Spencer, this Memphis team looks impressive. They could have a solid run this summer and perhaps have a shot at the playoffs. Obviously, it’s way too early to tell if this is what will happen. However, if these three players continue to grow and Edey is thrown into the mix again, the Memphis Grizzlies will be a dangerous combination.
