Commanders 100 Percent Confident Jayden Daniels Will Shock the NFL

The Washington Commanders took LSU QB Jayden Daniels at No. 2 in the NFL Draft.

When it comes to Washington Commanders Rookie QB Jayden Daniels, his teammates feel he’s fully prepared for his Sunday debut against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I think the first thing that jumps out is his release. He gets the ball out of his hands really, really quickly. His anticipation is at a high level for a guy that just got into the NFL,” said wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who is expected to be one of Daniel’s main targets Sunday.  speaking with media after practice Thursday, “He had a lot experience in college and you can tell he came in really polished.”

He also feels Jayden Daniels has the right work ethic to sustain a great career in the NFL. “You got a guy with a natural ability to throw the ball and run if he has to, and you got the work ethic…You have the chance to have a great player,” McLaurin said.  Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury echoed many of these sentiments: “Jayden is very good at processing information…We really tried to pour it all out on him and see how he could handle it and he’s handled it well…”

Defensive coach Joe Whitt Jr. said Daniels is very mature for being a rookie.

“The moxie that he has when he’s under center, the ability to go back and forth with Bobby Wagner [linebacker] as if he’s a five-year pro, you don’t Rookies do that,” he said. “He’s a leader. You don’t have to be a 30-year-old man to be a leader in this league. He’s a leader right now and he’s somebody the guys want to follow…He’s a guy that’s gonna win a lot of games for us.”

Commanders fans got a glimpse of what’s to come Sunday Week 1 of the NFL Preseason. In their opening game against the Jets. Eleven plays and 70 yards later, Daniels would take it in for his first touchdown as an NFL Quarterback.  What does he do next? He finds his mother in the stands and throws her his first touchdown ball. Daniels will hope to bring some of his LSU magic to his pro game.  Leading the nation in total offense in 2023, he threw for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns. He rushed for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior.

However, this is the NFL.  If there’s one set of stats to best on the field, it will be those of the only other Rookie QB to start in the Burgundy and Gold: Robert Griffin III. He’s only got to throw 3,200 yards, get 20 touchdowns, and stay under five interceptions. He also has to play in the Pro Bowl as a Rookie and win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.   Also, he only has to rush more than 815 yards. Can Jayden Daniels surpass that?

No pressure.

Jayden Daniels: One Of Many Rookies to Be Seen

The good thing is Daniels won’t be the only Rookie on the field. On the other hand, that could be terrifying. Along with Daniels, the Washington Commanders Depth Chart also shows wide receiver Luke McCaffrey, offensive tackle Brandon Coleman, and cornerback Mike Sainristil ready to go for Week 1.

With so many rookies on the field taking on the field, in contrast to Tampa Bay having a well-seasoned Baker Mayfield in the pocket, Sunday is going to be a heart-stopper or the beginning of something very special. If Jayden Daniels can keep up with Mayfield, who threw for 4,044 yards and had 28 touchdowns last season, Daniels will set a pace that will have the most seasoned of NFL quarterbacks giving him the side eye.  Not to mention, he’s going to also prove that head coach Dan Quinn is either a genius or a man who has no problems taking big gambles on his first year on the job.

As a reminder, the Washington Commanders were 4-13 last season, finishing fourth in the NFC East and 14th in the Conference.  Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET.
