Good news for the BCCI! Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, is going to take over as the head of the International Cricket Council in December. It was confirmed by the international cricket governing body on Tuesday. Shah was the only one nominated for this desired job. The 35-year-old, BCCI secretary since 2019, is now the youngest to reach the top of the world cricket organization.
Shah has been nominated by all fifteen members of the ICC Board. His term will begin on December 1, 2024, following the current Chair, Greg Barclay, who chose not to apply for a third term. This appointment was a watershed moment for the sport. Jay Shah became the lone nominee and inherited the leadership post at a period of enormous promise and growth in cricket.
Jay Shah’s Roles in Cricket Administration
Jay Shah has been the honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since October 2019. He’s the reason behind many substantial changes and achievements in Indian cricket. Furthermore, as Chair of the Asian Cricket Council from January 2021, he has gained excellent expertise in handling the challenges of international cricket administration across a broad area.
After being elected, Jay Shah stressed his intention to extend cricket’s worldwide reach and profit from its participation in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. “I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council. I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to globalize cricket further.”
We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before,” the 35-year-old said in an ICC media release.
Globalizing Cricket and Future Demand
Jay Shah’s election heralds a new era for the ICC, one defined by its efforts to broaden cricket’s reach while navigating the obstacles and possibilities posed by a quickly changing sports world. His emphasis on globalization, technology integration, and capitalizing on the momentum of the LA 2028 Olympics demonstrates a proactive attitude to secure cricket’s place in the global arena.
Jay Shah’s first job will be to monitor the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. As head of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), Shah was a staunch supporter of the Hybrid Model, which saw Pakistan and Sri Lanka co-host the Asia Cup ODIs in 2023. How Shah, now the ICC chairman, handles this situation will be critical, especially considering the potential that the Indian government would not allow the national team to travel to Pakistan.

In the long run, Jay Shah will need to handle many crucial challenges, including protecting the future of Test cricket by obtaining dedicated revenue. Also, he’ll preserve the viability of ODIs, and prevent core players from leaving to freelance in T20 leagues throughout the world. Creating an effective timetable that combines athletes’ well-being with financial prospects will also be a high goal. Another important hurdle on Jay Shah’s agenda would be to promote cricket’s participation in the Olympics, which will make its debut in Los Angeles in 2028.
